Very few comic creators ever get to see their ideas come to life. Hellboy creator Mike Mignola got to see his baby alive and kicking. He only had to travel halfway round the world to see it.
With a “Hellboy” film headed to the big screen on April 2, Mignola took Wizard inside his own private ‘hell’ as the movie was shot in Prague. Mignola kept a personal diary for Wizard, complete with photos from the set, and as part of the massive movie event in Wizard #150 (on sale Feb. 25), you’ll get a chance to read Mignola’s diary.
Get up close and personal as Mignola rubs elbows with actors Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Doug Jones (Abe Sapien), Selma Blair (Liz Sherman), Rupert Myers (Agent Myers) and director Guillermo del Toro (“Blade 2”) and shares his private thoughts about seeing his monster-stomping demon of good walk, talk and wreck. Here’s a taste:
“After more than five years of talking about it, I will finally get to see Ron [Perlman] as Hellboy,” writes Mignola. “Ron is perfect as Hellboy, as del Toro and I aways knew he would be. He seems so natural, the way he talks, the way he moves and the way he smokes a cigar. It’s very easy to forget he’s in four hours worth of makeup. His big stone hand and tail work so well you forget they’re operated by radio control.”
For more of Mignola’s diary, pick up Wizard #150, available in comic stores Wednesday, Feb. 25.
