Walkthrough – The Light Issue 5
By: David Pinckney
Alright, here is the conclusion to Nathan Edmondson's 5 issue mini-series, The Light! Again there are two parts! Spoiler free and a not so spoiler free.
Need to catch up? Here are the links to the previous 4 walkthroughs!
Issue 1, Issue 2, Issue 3, Issue 4
Let's get started!
Main Characters:
Coyle and Avery – Their relationship have been strained for the last four issues, and this issue is no different thanks to the growing intensity of the situation. We will get into the way the intensity escalates since the last issue in the next section. As far as developing the characters, we've already passed this point, in this final issue we have already seen the characters grow and evolve. Now we are going to see how these fully evolved characters will react to this one last event.
Simon – We've seen him since the tail end of issue two and much like Coyle and Avery, his development has come to an end. That said, Simon is what really pushes and drives the plot of this last issue and the conclusion of which is shocking.
Plot:
After Coyle killed Simon's brother in the last issue, Simon has made it a point to kill Coyle. A chase breaks out and Coyle and Avery are in a car trying their hardest to safely get away from Simon. This proves to be harder then they thought. Coyle has a plan though, he knows the one way he can get away and save his daughter. As for the details, considering this is the last issue, they will be explained in the not spoiler free section.
Main Events [NOT spoiler free]:
How it all ends:
Coyle isn't the model person, let alone the model parent, but he does without a doubt love his daughter and it is seen more so in this issue then any other issue. As we know, Coyle has looked into light and is now infected. He knows that in some way the power plant is the cause of what is happening. Given that he knows what will happen to him soon, all he cares about at this point is protecting his daughter (Avery still has no idea that her dad was infected).
They arrive at the power plant and he runs in. Simon only has a vendetta against Coyle so he follows Coyle in and leaves Avery alone in the car. Eventually Simon catches up with Coyle but this is where Coyle's plan comes into motion. He shines a light in Simon's eyes. Simon becomes infected. Coyle "let's go" of the infection and, much like the others in the previous issue, he explodes taking out the power plant, and Simon, with him.
After hearing the explosion, Avery exits the car to see the power plant explode. She express concern for her father but then, gets in the car puts on her father's goggles and drives away.
Up to the reader:
So is that the ending?! Well, it's kinda up to you. At least that's how I took it. We can assume that Avery can put two and two together and realize that her father sacrificed his life in order to save hers and potentially the many other lives to come. But what caused the infection? Was Coyle right in thinking that the infection starts from the power plant? What if he was wrong? Why did Avery put on her father's goggles? Was it to protect her eyes because she doesn't think it's over or was it something on a more sentimental level? I don't know, and this is part of the mystery that is The Light. You can make this ending what you want it to be, it leaves it open to the reader to wonder.
Overall, I would recommend just about anybody to read The Light. It is above all other things, interesting and engaging. Nathan Edmondson has done it yet again with The Light! If you have already read this and you're like me and need another Nathan Edmondson fix, then you don't have to wait to long. In January the next series by Edmondson is coming out entitled "Who Is Jake Ellis?" published by Image Comics.
That's all the walkthroughs for now! Hope you enjoyed.
