Five Horror Comics That Should Be On TV
David Pinckney
Comic book movies have been very predominant in the theaters lately, but that success hasn't been seen on television. Walking Dead was successful but with Human Target being cancelled, and NBC passing on Wonder Woman and Fox passing on Locke and Key, is there a comic out there that would be good for television? I'm going to take a crack at it and list five horror comics that I think would make good television shows.
(In no particular order)
1. Morning Glories
Morning Glories is very much a thriller comic and if you have read the comic you know that it can get intense and horrifying. The comic could translate well into a television show with the familiar setting of teenagers in school and all the drama that in sues, but have a twist to hook viewers with its sci-fi horror plot. To be honest, when I read the comic it feels like watching a show. It has just the right amount of drama and character development that make each issue unique which could easily make for good episodes.
2. Skullkickers
Granted, this isn't “horror” per-say but it does have some typical horror elements. Just looking at Skullkickers seeing it as an animated show isn't hard, in fact it just seems perfect. With its brand of comedy and its fantasy setting, the comic could easily find a home on one of the major networks. So far there are only 7 issues out, so there isn't a lot to go off of, but the series has so much it can do, that it would be hard to not be able to come up with a few episodes.
3. BPRD
This is a little dicey considering the Hellboy movies, but ignoring the movies and making it its own show, this has the potential of being a really good investigative show like Law and Order but with the paranormal. This one seems to be a bit harder to pitch, but it could fit nicely on Syfy or a channel like it. With all the stories that have been done in the BPRD and Hellboy comics, it would easy enough to have enough material to get a few seasons out of it. The question here is, “Do you put in Hellboy”? Personally, I believe putting in Hellboy would then make it a Hellboy show rather then a BPRD show. A cameo here and there? Sure, but the focus should be on the investigating and the paranormal that's threatening the world.
4. Dead @ 17
On the same lines as Morning Glories, this works as a drama revolving around a teenager. It's sort of tough to swallow the idea of yet ANOTHER teenage drama, but if done right it could feel just like a fun horror show. The comic offered a lot of depth to the characters and organizations that could really hook and invest viewers into the story. Like Skullkickers, this could also be one that translates well as an animated show. It may not be the best way to do the show like I believe Skullkickers would be, but it's something to consider.
5. American Vampire
Even with the vampire trend seemingly dying off, I believe the setting and story of American Vampire would translate well to the small screen. American Vampire has such a different spin on the whole idea of a vampire story that it's uniqueness should be enough to grab an audience. In addition to that, we don't really see anything quite like it on at the moment so it would be refreshing to see.
Of course there are plenty of other comics that would be good on television, but these where just 5 that I'd personally love to see. What about you? What horror comics do you think would make a good show and why?
