What if I told you that one of the greatest creative teams in comic history wrote a lost (well, not really lost, but fairly unknown) horror comic series in the 1980’s? Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan, the team behind the legendary Dracula run, which included the first appearance of Blade, teamed to create Night Force for DC Comics.
Night Force was a team brought together by the mysterious Baron Winters. The Baron is charged with maintaining a balance between good and evil preventing them from stepping over each other's boundaries. Baron Winters operates from Wintersgate, a mansion in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. whose 'nexus' is the occult 'Laboratium Arcanum'. The structure is also honeycombed with doorways that lead to the past. Winters is capable of passing through many of those portals but is (for reasons unknown) forbidden from exiting the mansion into the present.
The core team of Night Force consists of Jack Gold, Donovan Caine and Vanessa van Helsing. This loose knit group is put together to battle supernatural threats.
Perhaps my favorite arc in this 14 issue series are issues 8-10, where Night Force member Paul Brooks, a small-time thug, is sent by Baron Winters to liberate a New York City building from a demon.
At the end of the series you will see just how unfair life is for the team. Hint! Limbs are lost!
If you can find these gems in your bargain bin be sure to grab them!
