Top 11 Eerie Publication Comic Covers

Guest contributor, Mike Howlett, has provided us with his list of the Top 11 Eerie Publication covers of all time. His book, THE WEIRD WORLD OF EERIE PUBLICATIONS, will be available in Fall 2010 from Feral House.

Eerie Publications was a publisher of black-and-white, horror-anthology comics magazines. Titles included Horror Tales, Terror Tales, Weird, Tales from the Tomb, Tales of Voodoo, Terrors of Dracula, 3-D Monsters and Witches' Tales.

With that being said, here are Mike's choices for the Top Eleven Eerie Publication comic covers of all time:

11. Tales of Voodoo V5 #7 12/72Tales from the Crypt comic

This one has such a great movement to it... I love to vampire girl- she's stacked but still horrific.

10. Weird V1 #12 10/66Tales from the Crypt comic

Classic and iconic. This striking image was reprinted 3 times with very little added to it... it didn't need it.

#9. Tales of Voodoo V4 #6 11/71Crime SuspenStories comic

Looking more like a Warren cover than a Pub, this is just a gorgeous painting.

8. Tales from the TombV6 #6 11/74CrimeSuspenStories 24

Nice crumbly zombies! And that bound victim is shitting bricks! I would be too.

#7. Terror Tale V1 #8 5/69Crime SuspenStories comic

Human corn on the cob. What more need be said?!

6. Terror Tales V3 #1 1/71Crime SuspenStories

Superb color and action! This is what multi-monster mayhem is all about!

5. Terror Tales V6 #2 4/74Vault of horror comic

One of my favorite latter day covers. A new cover artist who maintained the jarring colors and action of his predecessors.

4. Weird V3 #5 12/69Crime SuspenStories comic

It's someone in a meat-grinder... and they're still alive!! What's not to love! Gore and a sense of humor.

3. Witches’ Tales V3 #6 12/71Crime SuspenStories comic

Iconic, colorful and the original hangs on my wall.

2. Weird V3 #4 5/69Vault of Horror comic

The look on the victim's face says it all. This is the closest thing to pure horror on any Eerie Pub cover... perhaps any horror comic cover.

1. Weird V3 #2 5/69Crime SuspenStories comic

I'd missed this back in the day and first saw it in the Earlie 80s. Thus began my OBSESSION with the Pubs! This is just so over the top and crazy and politically incorrect. It's perfection!

Mike Howlett is a life-long horror comic addict living in Boston. He is the author of THE WEIRD WORLD OF EERIE PUBLICATIONS, coming in Fall 2010 from Feral House. (Get updates on the book's very own Facebook or MySpace pages). He is also bald and far sighted.
