Jeff Johnson received critical acclaim even before this — his professional debut — in his popular mini-comics and in such anthologies as Buzzard, Pictopia, and Dirty Plotte. It's not difficult to see the appeal in this beautiful, moody and meticulous artwork, obsessively filled with subtle hatching and electric design. The first issue contains part one of "The Garden," a story of a daughter who eerily attempts to fill the void left by the passing of the Woman of the House, only to play the role of tyrant. This disturbing tale is followed by a hilarious and surprisingly deep depiction of a familiar sailor-man's adventures in the red-light district — a comical Crying Game. Lastly, enter "The Art Class" for another glance at reality through Jeff's cryptic kaleidoscope. A stunning debut, not to be missed.
