Josh Bile Cantrell talks Nightmares of the Macabre

Nightmares of the Macabre is a comic that is scheduled to be released later this year. The synopsis claims the book follows in the gruesome tradition of such great anthologies as Tales From the Crypt and Creepshow.

We spoke with writer, Josh Bile Cantrell, about the book.

The Big Bad Wolf: Can you give our readers a synopsis of Nightmares of the Macabre?

Nightmares comicJosh Bile Cantrell: Nightmares of the Macabre is an idea I came up with while going through some of my old comics. I have always been a fan of the old EC comics and really think it's unfortunate that there are not many companies putting out that same style anymore. So I thought it would be fun to do a series that was inspired from the old Tales From the Crypt comics by EC and even the Creepshow comic from King, but put more of a modern spin on them by using political undertones and make them a little more gory for all the horror fans. Each issue (except the first story which is a 2 part) will be a different story of terror, but only some will have a twist ending. I find that if you use the twist ending all the time then people will expect it and it kind of loses its intrigue, so some stories will just end as is.

The Big Bad Wolf: Can you tell us about the stories in the first issue?

Josh Bile Cantrell: The first issue will actually be a two part issue. This first story we decided to go with is called Foundation 23. It started out as a script I was writing for an indie horror film, but after i had finished writing it I realized it would make a really good comic instead. Its about the military sending two idiots out to dump some leftover chemicals, unfortunately they dump them in the water reservoir that supplies Seattle and its surrounding area's. It causes everyday people to basically lose their minds, all sense of reality, and causing them to regress to their most basic savage instincts which is killing and feeding. Think of Jacobs Ladder meets 28 Days Later but with a little more gore and a great twist at the end.

The Big Bad Wolf: What can we expect from this book in terms of blood and gore?

Josh Bile Cantrell: Ha. Well both me and Thiago, my illustrator, are huge death metal and horror fans so if its gore you want its gore you get! Some stories will have more than others, but there is going to be plenty of splatter, disembowelment, blood, human skinning, and much more . Anyone who is a fan of horror will definitely be satisfied with this comic, plus we make sure that the amount of gore will not take away from the substance of the stories.

The Big Bad Wolf: Who is the rest of the creative team on the book?

Josh Bile Cantrell: The creative team is Thiago F. Castro and me, Josh 'Bile' Cantrell. I do all of the writing and editing and Thiago does all of the illustration and and lettering

The Big Bad Wolf: How did you hook up with Thiago Castro?

Josh Bile Cantrell: We met through a post I had made on Facebook of all places. I had tried out a couple of artist's here in Seattle but they were just not as dedicated and into horror as I would have liked. I was about to give up looking because nobody wanted to do horror art, so I threw a post up on an artist/writer comic group on Facebook as a last ditch effort and Thiago responded. We exchanged emails and I checked out his work and was really impressed. He has a very unique style that gives you a creepy feeling when you look at it, what can I say, we became friends and started immediately on the first issue.

The Big Bad Wolf: Is the book color or black and white?

Josh Bile Cantrell: It would be an injustice to the horror genre to have a comic with lots of gore in black and white. Last time I checked blood was red not gray or black.

The Big Bad Wolf: What is the price and when is the release date of the first issue?

Josh Bile Cantrell: We are looking to keep it under $4.00 an issue. But we are giving away the first 100 copies of the first issue. We are taking the first 100 people who preorder it and sending it to them for free. Preorders can be made by either emailing us at nomgore@hotmail.com subject 1st Issue Preorder, or they can send us a message on myspace with the same subject. We are shooting for a 6/6/09 release but the way it is looking right now it might be released a week or two sooner.

The Big Bad Wolf: How often do you plan on publishing this and how many issues per year?

Josh Bile Cantrell: We are going to plan on one issue every 6 weeks so about 8 or 9 a year. The first issue will somewhat be a back to back release being that it is a two part story, the second half will be released about 3 weeks after the first.

The Big Bad Wolf: Where can our readers find out more about Nightmares of the Macabre?

Josh Bile Cantrell: Myspace.com/nomdeath, they can also email us with any questions, or what they would like to see in future issues at nomgore@hotmail.com, or josh_bile@hotmail.com.

The Big Bad Wolf: In closing, what would you like to say about Nightmares of the Macabre?

Josh Bile Cantrell: To keep from fainting repeat to yourself, It's only a comic, It's only a comic, It's only a comic......

The Big Bad Wolf: Thank you for your time, Josh! Good luck with Nightmares of the Macabre.
