Vampire Apocalypse interview with Eric Mullarky

Hey Eric thank you for taking the time to talk with us about what's going on at New Baby Productions and the announcement of the Vampire Apocalypse GN.

Dan Royer: So what can you tell me about New Baby Productions? What are you all about?

vampire apocalypse bookEric Mullarky: I started New Baby Productions in 2008 in order to produce our ELEMENTAL FOURCES comic book series. Initially, I was attempting to revive Bill Willingham's ELEMENTALS series, but when the rights-holders were non-receptive, I created my own super team of elementally-powered persons. My wife was pregnant at the time that all this was going on and it seemed natural to name the company 'New Baby.' After lots of research, I decided to self-publish the series. It was a very interesting and rewarding experience.

With the ELEMENTAL FOURCES mini-series wrapped up, my desire to continue publishing has led me to look at other opportunities. A short follow-up series called ELEMENTAL FOURCES: BROTHERS IN ARMS is being worked on for a release in 2010. I also looked into licensing as a way to grow the company. And I have always been a fan of horror and graphic novels, so I pursued those opportunities as well.

Dan Royer: We hear rumors that the Vampire Apocalypse Series will be made into graphic novels. What can you tell us about that?

Eric Mullarky: The rumors are true. I had been reading a few different horror novels to search for the 'next big thing' that could be adapted into the sequential art form. But nothing had the real edge that I was looking for. A colleague of mine recommended Derek Gunn's VAMPIRE APOCALYPSE books. Reading the first book, I knew that this would make a great graphic novel. Lots of action. Vampires. Rebels. Post-apocalyptic world. What more could you want? It is a very visual story and will translate well.

The series will be written by CJ Hurtt, who has lots of experience with the horror genre. And art will be provided by Argentinean Federico Combi. Federico has this realism style to his art that will be a great for the story.

Dan Royer: Was it an easy process to get series writer Derek Gunn onboard?

Eric Mullarky: Derek was very responsive to my proposal. The only person more excited about this project than me could be him! Derek is a great guy and has been very helpful in getting this project off the ground.

Dan Royer: What makes this particular series stand out to you in regards to horror comics?vampire apocalypse book

Eric Mullarky: One thing that I do not enjoy in today's pop culture is how vampires are often portrayed. These 'creatures' should be feared, not loved and felt sorry for.

Derek's novels have evil, mean vampires. They have remain hidden in the shadows for millennium and have now appeared to enslave humanity. They do that with the help of thralls, humans bitten by vampires but not fully turned. These thralls provide unique adversaries to our protagonists.

Dan Royer: Do you think it will be an easy transition into comic form?

Eric Mullarky: It is my view that if something is easy, we probably are not doing it right. With Derek, CJ, Federico, and myself all having views about the direction of the project, I am expecting some differences of opinion somewhere down the line. Some things are going to be changed in the graphic novel version, which may not completely please Derek. I understand that, as VAMPIRE APOCALYPSE is his baby. But Derek also knows that there needs to be changes, as not every character and plot element from a 300+ page novel can fit in a 120-page graphic novel. Fans of the original series need not worry though. We are not butchering Derek's novel. It is our desire to produce a worthy adaptation. Otherwise there was no point in licencing his work.

Dan Royer: What can we expect from this graphic novel in terms of blood and gore?

Eric Mullarky: That ultimately remains to be seen. The story is more of a military horror. So you will see lots of violence with blood. I will encourage CJ and Federico to get lots of gore in there as well.

Dan Royer: Would this graphic novel be covering the events of the first book or all three?

Eric Mullarky: We are adapting only the first book. If successful, we will also look to adapt the other books.

vampire apocalypse bookDan Royer: Can you tell us about the main characters?

Eric Mullarky: Our main protagonist is Peter Harris, a young man who convinces the rebel group to take more of an offensive stance against the vampires and thralls. His work increases the size of their group, but also makes them more vulnerable as limited food and supplies begin to have an effect.

Nero is the lead vampire. He is mean and nasty. And the small group of rebels is making him angry. One thing we are adding to the graphic novel is a plot element that ties Peter to Nero. Their pasts will co-mingle, making for an interesting dynamic.

Dan Royer: Can we expect more horror graphic novels from New Baby Productions in the future?

Eric Mullarky: That is the plan. I hope this first graphic novel proves successful enough to allow us to adapt the rest of Derek's series. And I would also like to try some non-vampire horror. If there are novelists out there that think that there books would make for good graphic novels, please let me know. I am open to all suggestions.

Dan Royer: Are you yourself a horror comic fan? (if so what titles are you into?)

Eric Mullarky: Yes. I am a huge fan of Mike Mignola's work. HELLBOY and BPRD are my favorite books out there. I have heard good things about Tim Seeley's HACK/SLASH and am looking to acquire copies of that series.

Dan Royer: Thanks for your time Eric. It is much appreciated.
