'OUTBREAK' The new series from the writer of OLYMPUS and the artist of THE SURROGATES. In Oregon, a mysterious virus infects anyone that looks into an electric light. An abusive father blindfolds his daughter and together they escape town as people are burning alive from the inside out. A fierce, action-packed and gritty tale of survival, THE LIGHT is 28 DAYS LATER meets 30 DAYS OF NIGHT.
We caught up with writer, Nathan Edmondson,
to talk about The Light.
The Big
Bad Wolf: What inspired you to create The Light?
Nathan
Edmondson: Partly, it was working with Brett; I wanted
to work with him and this is the sort of genre he was game for. For a
while I'd had this nugget in my head, that an infection might travel through
light, but after Brett said he was interested in working with me, I was
able to flesh the story out in about two days.
The Big Bad Wolf: What can you tell us about this virus that is affecting people?
Nathan Edmondson:
Read the book, mostly. What is interesting about the virus in terms of the story is that what it is isn't the most important problem for the characters. As you'll see in the first issue, they just want to get out of town. The "why" will come later.
The Big Bad Wolf: Can you give us a rundown of the main characters in this book?
Nathan Edmondson:
The primary focus is on Coyle, an abusive father who's just been fired from his job as a welder. There's his daughter, Avery, whom he blindfolds. After issue one various other survivors appear and some join the story, but each will bring something to it. I don't want to give anything away but keep reading and you'll meet others. Some are desperate and just want to live. Some are confused. And others...
The Big Bad Wolf: What can we expect from this series in terms of blood and gore?
Nathan Edmondson:
It's not over the top, but we've got moments here and there that will have some real effect. This aspect of the book grows in intensity with each issue, as the story does. The primary sort of gore we have in the book is atypical of other stories in this vein, because it relates to an infection which is quite unique itself.
The Big Bad Wolf: Do you think this book is a perfect fit for fans of 28 Days Later?
Nathan Edmondson:
I very much hope so. THE LIGHT is not a zombie book,
of course, but it, like 28 DAYS LATER, looks at the human response to
a cataclysmic event or a suffocating threat. The primary concern is the
survivors, and how they handle such a mysterious and omnipotent foe as
this virus appears to be. Both books are about a journey, as well, wherein
the landscape is the primary antagonist.
The Big Bad Wolf: How was it working with Brett Weldele on this book?
Nathan Edmondson:
Fantastic. I've gotten to know Brett and he's a class
act, so not only is his artwork superb but he's just a good guy to work
with. We'll be joining up at a few cons and we've already sat for a signing
together, which will be and has been a pleasure.
Brett has a strong eye for layouts and panel progression,
and he's done lots and lots of work. He'll be halfway through issue three
before issue one ever hits the stands, as well, which really makes everything
so much easier.
The Big Bad Wolf: What has impressed you the most about his work?
Nathan Edmondson:
It's hard to say, but since working with him I feel like
I want all of my books to have a sense of his style. I very much like
the way Brett makes his characters into real people, adding unattractive
features and really making them feel like individuals in the real world.
But as far as what really impresses me....just
wait until you get through the series. He's got a few tricks up his sleeve
which have really blown me away. Issue one is beautiful and exciting,
but trust me: subsequent issues will be much more intense, and Brett's
pen drives that fact home.
The Big Bad Wolf: When is the release date of the first issue and how much is the book?
Nathan Edmondson:
April 14, and the book sells for just 2.99!
The
Big Bad Wolf: Where can our readers get more information about The Light?
Nathan Edmondson:
My website (www.nathan-e.com),
Image Comics, and the Image Comics forums for starters. But I'd say check
back with the online comic news sites for previews, too. We've also got
a facebook group (Run Away From the Light) where we'll be posting updates.
The Big Bad Wolf: In closing, what would you like to say to our readers about The Light?
Nathan Edmondson:
Enjoy! I think this offers something new and you'll be hooked in as you keep reading. As always, I appreciate response so email me or find me on the forums to discuss the book.
The Big Bad Wolf: Thank you for your time,
Nathan. Best of luck with The Light!
