Cassie receives a strange anonymous suicide note and after reading it she begins a downward slide from a sane and controlled world into a world of twisted nightmarish images, a mysterious man who guides her along the dark path, and a pulling in her mind, to take her life and escape the nightmare. But, if she doesn't give into to the leading of the note to kill herself she must wonder a shadow world, forever unable to die.
We caught up with co-creator and penciler, Dwayne Biddix,
to talk about SUICIDE NOTE.
Dan Royer: Hey Dwayne thanks for taking time to talk with me about SUICIDE NOTE. First of all let’s talk about you. Who are you and what do you do?
Dwayne Biddix: I am Dwayne Biddix and I am the co-creator and penciler for SUICIDE NOTE.
Dan Royer:
How did you find yourself getting into making comics?
Dwayne Biddix:
When I was a kid in high school a friend of mine loaned me a copy of WHAT IF? and I knew that comics were what I wanted to do. After some failed attempts to do some independent work the studio co-founder Chris Carpenter and I created Hard Way Studios to do our own ideas.
Dan Royer: So what can you tell me about SUICIDE NOTE?
Dwayne Biddix:
SUICIDE NOTE is a physiological nightmare graphic novel. It is disturbing and taboo as it deals heavily with concepts of suicide and a sort of lost existence.
Dan Royer: What's it all about?
Dwayne Biddix:
Cassie finds a strange suicide note in her house. After she reads it her life falls into deep darkness. A strange man named Honus acts as a guide, showing her where the note wants her to go and where she will end up if she ignores the notes demand of her death.
Dan Royer: Who are the main characters?
Dwayne Biddix:
Cassandra "Cassie" Juliee-Ottello is the poor star of the story and Honus Cicada as her guide. Cassie’s family also plays a big role in the story.
Dan Royer:
Where did this idea come from?
Dwayne Biddix:
Ha ha, well actually the most basic idea comes from a Christmas movie commercial. A character is walking along as a strange note floats down to her. I thought, “Boy, that would be freaky if that was a suicide note!” I played around with it and built up the most basic story and Jamison Kasian added his wonderful layers to the story and SUICIDE NOTE was born.
Dan Royer: If you were to give this book a movie style rating (G, PG, PG-13, R, X) what would it get, and why would you say that?
Dwayne Biddix:
R. It is a very dark story. Not really gory but really disturbing. Plus a healthy dose of cussing and some… ‘uncomfortable’ nudity.
Dan Royer: What are you hoping readers can take away from this story?
Dwayne Biddix:
Some sleepless nights. I think good horror stories stays in your mind. Well after you finish the story elements should ooze around in your mind, taking you to some bad places.
Dan Royer: Is this a series that we can expect more from in the future?
Dwayne Biddix:
Probably. With the note being able to pass from one person to another we could easily do more stories with this framework. We have some ideas in mind for a follow up as well as an idea to do some projects beyond comics with this.
Dan Royer: So how did you come up with the idea for the Suicide Note being able to pass from person to person?
Dwayne Biddix:
If I believed chain letters were real that would be a highly unsettling thing to be passed. It is like someone passing you a curse. So that was added to the ‘rules’ for the note.
Dan Royer: Can we expect more from you horror comic wise in the future?
Dwayne Biddix:
Oh yeah. I love horror comics. We are close to releasing a zombie one-shot called THE SHELTER as well as a slasher style one-shot we may call, TOOTH GRINDER.
Dan Royer: Can you talk a bit about your experiences so far with working in comics?
Dwayne Biddix:
It sucks but is one of the best things ever. You get to create amazing ideas and draw exciting things, but you have to deal with the business side of promoting your work and all the paperwork. But when someone connects with your idea, it makes it awesome again.
Dan Royer: Were you into any horror titles growing up that lead you to want to create a book like this?
Dwayne Biddix:
Not really comic book titles. But I love horror movies. SUICIDE NOTE is very much in the vain of J-Horror in that it is a slowly building nerve shredding story that relied more on screwing with your mind over showing you buckets of blood.
Dan Royer: What comics are you currently reading?
Dwayne Biddix:
None really. It influences me too much when I am creating. Though I do keep up with stuff through the net and Wizard.
Dan Royer: So where can readers find out more about this book?
Dwayne Biddix:
Dan Royer: So in summary give me a quick recap on SUICIDE NOTE and why fans should give it a try.
Dwayne Biddix:
SUICIDE NOTE is one of the most unique ideas I have seen in a while. The idea that a cursed note just finds its way into your life and puts you on a path of suicide or a tortured existence lost in the shadows is a frightening idea. Unlike most horror ideas where you are told NOT to do something; “Don’t go into the woods.” “Don’t mess with the puzzle box.” “Don’t fall asleep.” This story just picks you for the curse and you are forced to play by its rule. Very scary.
Dan Royer: Thank you for your time,
Dwayne. Best of luck with SUICIDE NOTE!
