Andy MacDonald talks Terminator 1984

After the shocking events he witnessed in humanity's future, Kyle Reese has made the history-changing jump from the year 2029 to a world previously beyond his imagining -- 1984 Los Angeles.

It's a time before the war, before Skynet, but not without danger, as Kyle begins his mission to find and protect Sarah Connor from time-traveling T-800s. Close behind is Kyle's friend Ben, with a crucial mission of his own. Hot off the critically-acclaimed Terminator: 2029, Zack Whedon and Andy MacDonald begin the next chapter of Kyle's journey toward destiny in their gripping reimaging of James Cameron's classic.

We caught up with artist, Andy MacDonald, to talk about Terminator 1984.

Horror News Network: What are your thoughts on all the positive reviews that you and writer, Zack Whedon, received for the first series, Terminator 2029?

Andy MacDonald:   I think it's fantastic.  I couldn't be happier that people are enjoying our additions to the world of The Terminator.

Horror News Network: As an artist, what is it like going from the ravaged landscape of 2029 to the pre-Skynet year of 1984?

Andy MacDonald:  L.A. in the '84 vs. L.A. in the apocalype?  It's a tough call.  They are both such ravaged Hellscapses with death at every turn.  No no.  I'm kidding.  I would never say such terrible things about Los Angeles in the apocalype.  Again, kidding.  I don't want anyone to get angry letters from the 80s.  In a lot of ways it was little easier to take modern L.A. and just destroy most of it for the 2029 series.  To do 1984 justice, I'm digging to find as much reference for '84 L.A. as possible and make sure it gets the attention it deserves.  Which buildings where there; what had not been built yet; the general feel of Los Angeles in 1984; etc.  That kind of thing.  It's a little more research footwork, but I'm loving it.

Horror News Network: Will it be the same Schwarzenegger T-800 that we will see in this series?

Andy MacDonald:  Kind of?  I mean, that one is there for a minute at the very least.  Things will synch up with the movie somewhat and you'll see what I mean.  I don't want to ruin any surprises for anyone, so I'll just say that it's hard to keep an army of Terminators from the future with a time machine down.

Horror News Network: How will events in this series match with the first Terminator movie?

Andy MacDonald:   The first issue synchs up tightly with the first Terminator movie.  But just for a bit.  The movie is kind of the jumping-off point for the 1984 story.

Horror News Network: What can we expect between Kyle Reese and Sarah Connor?

Andy MacDonald:  Oh man... Again, I don't want to ruin anything for anyone, so I'll keep it painfully vague:  There's some sadness, followed by some hope and joy, then probably a liittle more sadness.  I looked up "star-crossed" somehwere and for some reason a picture of these two popped up.  But who can say?

Horror News Network: What do you guys have in store for Ben?

Andy MacDonald:  I like the Ben character a lot, and in the 1984 series, I've found a new level of respect for him.   He's been through a tremendous amount in a very short amount of time, but his optimism and resolve carry him when he should be an emotional/mental/physical shambling mess.  His first obstacle will be surviving Los Angeles in 1984 after living your whole life in its post-apocalyptic shell.

Horror News Network: How does it feel to add your own little piece of history onto this franchise?

Andy MacDonald:  It's very exciting and a litlte surreal.  I think Zack's done an amazing job of giving everyone a solid voice and place in the mythos that makes sense and meshes with The Terminator.  I'm thrilled to be part of the team that's bringing characters like Ben and Paige to life in the Terminator franchise.

Horror News Network: In closing, what would you like to say about Terminator 1984?

Andy MacDonald: I may have already said too much...  BUT we would still love to hear what everyone else would like to say about Terminator 1984!
