We have nothing to fear, but fear itself and Zombies.
Fubar is just another old-fashioned World War II Zombie anthology featuring 13 stories from a veritable army of small press creators. This Zombie-Nazi smashing book spans the entire European theater from Sussex to Stalingrad as the Allies come face to face with the walking dead.
We caught up with creator, Jeff McComsey, to talk about FUBAR.
Horror News Network: How did you come up with the concept of this book?
Jeff McComsey: The two type of stories I love to draw most are World War II stories and Zombie stories. In combining the two, the Zombie aspect really for the most part pulls the glory out of the war story. There isn't going to be a victory. Zombies don't surrender. I like that extra dose of hopelessness that you get when you combine the two. It makes for some great stories that showcase the nobitity of people as well as thier capacity for brutality.
I also love putting anthologies together and hadn't done one in a while. I figured why not put the two genres together that I love and see what happens.
I think the trick to putting together an anthology is having a theme that gets the creators excited. When I contacted the large army of small press creators that eventually worked on this book and told them what I had in mind, everybody got back immediately and said they would love to do one. Apparently I wasn't the only one who Liked WW II and Zombie stories.
Horror News Network: World War 2 featured so many famous and infamous people. Will we see any of them in Fubar?
Jeff McComsey: Most of the stories feature your average rank and file soldiers but General George S. Patton does make a memorable apearance in one of them. We also have a gallery in the back of the book that features Zombie portraits of some of those infamous and famous figures.
Horror News Network: Can you tell us the creative team and a synopsis of each of the stories featured in Fubar?

Horror News Network: What can we expect in terms of blood and guts in this book?
Jeff McComsey: There's some exploding heads and face chewing to be sure, but one of my favorite parts about FUBAR is that I recieved a wide range of stories from the different creative teams. Those stories range from very cerebral character driven stuff to all out Zombie smashing shoot'em ups.
Horror News Network: What can we expect in terms of extras (pin-ups, etc) in the book?
Jeff McComsey: We have a Pin up gallery featuring some of the promotional stuff we did for FUBAR as well some actual pin ups we recieved. In additioned we have the "World War II Zombie All-Star" gallery featuring pin ups of Zombified famous WW II figures ranging from General Eisenhower to Eva Braun.
Horror News Network: With so many zombie titles out there now, what do you think will make Fubar stand out?
Jeff McComsey: There are a LOT of Zombie comics out there. I think the reason why is because Zombie comics are so much fun to do and they are also very fun to read. This book is thirteen stories from a bunch of my favorite creators doing that thing they do and loving every minute of it. This doesn'y make FUBAR unique, it just makes it a really good read.
If you dig zombie stories, you'll enjoy it. If you dig World War II stories you'll love it.
Horror News Network: Will we see more Fubar tales in the future?
Jeff McComsey: Absolutely. "FUBAR: volume one" is the first of what I intend to be a trilogy of anthologies that catalog a massive zombie outbreak during World War II.
This first volume takes place exclusively in the European theater.
The second volume will take place exclusively in the Pacific theater and will be titled "FUBAR: House of the Rising Sun".
The third volume will be called "FUBAR: The War at Home.", and chronicles the eventuall spread of the outbreak back to the United States.
Right now the idea is to release one a year. We just debuted the first volume at the Baltimore comic con and the response was so amazing that we may shoot to release volume two there next year.
