Hack/Slash Eva interview with Brandon JerwaHack/Slash Eva interview with Brandon Jerwa

Dynamite Entertainment is proud to announce that Tim Seeley's most famous creation, Hack/Slash, will be crossing-over with Eva, the daughter of Dracula, in May 2011 at Dynamite Entertainment in a four-issue mini-series, with covers by Tim Seeley himself!

We caught up with creator, Brandon Jerwa to talk about the Hack/Slash Eva crossover.

Horror News Network: What are your thoughts on being able to use the Hack/Slash characters?

Brandon Jerwa: Tim and I were both working together on G.I. JOE around the time of the original Hack/Slash launch, so I've been watching the franchise grow from its humble beginnings and it's a pleasure to have the chance to contribute something to Tim's crazy-ass H/S universe. Cassie and Vlad are really unique characters, and they're definitely different from my usual fare. It's nice to branch out and let loose at the same time. On the other hand, I've already worked with Dynamite's Eva, and have wanted to do more with her since the "Daughter of the Dragon" one-shot I wrote a couple of years back, so this is really sort of a perfect mix between the old and the new for me.

Horror News Network: What input has Tim Seeley had on your writing of his team?

Brandon Jerwa:  Naturally, Tim has oversight on this whole project. He listened to my initial plot idea and was happy with it. We riffed it back and forth on the phone, and then he helped me work out specific details to help it fit in with the current plans he has in the main series. He also signs off on the scripts, and thus far has had very few notes for me. Actually, a lot of his input for the first couple of issues (I'm writing #3 at the time of this interview) has concerned Vlad's dialogue. Hack/Slash fans will know that Vlad has an odd sort of cadence and syntax to his speech; overall, I've done all right with that, but I think Tim's been hearing Vlad's voice in his head for so long at this point that he just knows exactly how Vlad would phrase something.

Horror News Network: Most readers are familiar with Hack/Slash. Since Eva has only a handful of appearances under her belt, can you give our readers a bio of the character?

Brandon Jerwa:  Eva is the daughter of Dracula, thrust forward from the 15th century via magical means with Frankenstein's monster (who now calls himself Michael) as her sidekick. She can sense innate evil and believes that she and Michael are on a mission from God to cleanse the world of foul things like werewolves and vampires.

Horror News Network: Eva was a character you had a chance to write previously. What are your feelings on this character and would you like to be able to take that character as an ongoing?

Brandon Jerwa: I've been begging to bring Eva back for a while now. I feel there's a lot of potential in the character, and I would give my right hand to really expand her story in a series of minis, an ongoing, or maybe even a webcomic. With the exception of my one-shot, Eva and Michael have only appeared as crossover components; while that's certainly a lot of fun and some great exposure, I think they could really use some breathing room to have their own adventures. So Dynamite, if you're reading this - give me some open land with no fences, and I'll show you how fast and far these characters can really run.

Horror News Network: What can we expect from this series in terms of blood and guts?

Brandon Jerwa: Oh, we have blood and guts by the truckload. Things will only become more violent and wild as the mini-series rolls on. Like I said, I'm writing issue 3 right now...and it's messy.

Horror News Network: How has it been working with artist, Cezar Razek on this series?

Brandon Jerwa: We worked together before, on the Stargate: Vala Mal Doran series, so I think we know what to expect from each other at this point. I try to keep him on his toes.

Horror News Network: What has impressed you the most with ihs artwork?

Brandon Jerwa: Cezar has a unique style and he really does a fine job of conveying the action and the emotion with equal strength. He also excels at drawing the kind of weird crap I demand of him while still managing to surprise me with the results.

Horror News Network: In closing, what would you like to say about the Hack/Slash Eva crossover?

Brandon Jerwa: It's for fans of both franchises, but perfect for new readers as well. This is a summer movie, in IMAX 3-D, and it's rated R. So, maybe this isn't the book you buy to get your grandmother into comics...but it could be a perfect way to trigger her heart condition and get you some inheritance money. Please spend it on comics, and don't tell the police I helped you plan this out.
