Dream Reavers interview with Raphael MoranDream Reavers interview with Raphael Moran
On their 16th birthday, four teens from around the world all fell into a strange and sudden coma. One by one they broke free from their prison of dreams to realize there is another reality beyond the veil of sleep. This place is called Astral. Nightmarish creatures called “Spooks” have taken over every crevice of the land. Unwillingly caught in a war they don’t understand, these kids are the only ones that can stop them before the Spooks find their way into our world.
We caught up with writer, Raphael Moran, to talk about Dream Reavers.
Horror News Network: How did you come up with the concept for this series?
Raphael Moran: I've always been fascinated with nightmares and dreams. All over the world
there are different interpretations and theories behind them. I wanted to
create a story that meshed all these different theories along with ideas of
my own to create this new mythology of my own.
The real seed of the idea for the series came to me 20 years ago when I saw
two movies from the 80's. "Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Dreamscape".
Probably everyone knows of Elm Street, but Dreamscape I think is a very
under rated movie. It's about government dream assassins. I think that's
one of the coolest ideas ever when I was a kid. The dream world is a
place where anything can happen. You're only limited by your imagination.
Horror News Network: Can you tell us about the main characters in the book?
Raphael Moran: Each one of the main characters were born with a special ability. Marcus
has to ability to travel into other people's dreams. Nyla can manipulate
the thoughts of people to make them do whatever she wants. Sophia can make
your greatest fantasy come to life and read the thoughts of people. Aaron
can control the Astral plane.
Most of these characters think these gifts are a curse, while others are
seen as modern day saints. Each one of them has a dark secret that will
effect each other.
They were born from different parts of the world and all born at the same
time. They all went into a mysterious coma at the same time on their 16th
birthday and are sent into a world between life and death called Astral.
Horror News Network: Can you tell us a bit about the Spooks?
Raphael Moran: Spooks are monstrous creatures in the Astral plane. They feed off the fear
and nightmares of humans. They are also the ones that influence evil
thoughts in mankind within the context of the book. They are led by a
mysterious person called the Spook King, who has a strange connection to the
heroes of the story. The spooks want to come into the real world and take
over all the minds of mankind to make a world of murderous psychos.
Horror News Network: What can we expect in terms of blood and guts?
Raphael Moran: Oh you will see a lot. Buckets of it, in fact. Plus a ton of severed limbs
too. There's a special scene where the comic panels are created out of
pools of blood from a previous scene. I don't think that's ever been done
before.
Horror News Network: Tell us a bit about the artists involved in this project.
Raphael Moran: The main artist on the book is Marc Borstel. He was nominated for best new
comer artist last year. He didn't win, but he should have. Also in the
series there are various dream sequences done by a variety of different
artists to reflect the different tone of the dreams. Atul Bakshi does a
twisted take on classic Jack Kirby while Dave Hedmark does his own take on
EC horror comics.
