DeathCurse interview with Brockton McKinney and Bo FaderDeathCurse interview with Brockton McKinney and Bo Fader

DeathCurse is a new horror comic modeled on the Eerie/Creepy/EC/House of Mystery style comics of the 80s. Each issue contains four to six individual stand alone stories with an over-arching theme based on the narrators, the recurring characters, Mr. Latch and the titular Curse.

The Curse is a ‘mummified’ baby sitting with the gruff Mr. Latch. They both appear in matching black and white suits and reside in a supernatural ‘house’, a purgatory they are forced to co-exist in, and tell the stories of other unfortunate souls. The house itself is located in the cul-de-sac at the end of limbo, a neighborhood of houses each populated by its own horror host.

Our narrators sit in their particular old house, in a room with hundreds of VHS tapes located in the wooden shelving system behind them. There is an ancient looking TV on an old school roller-cart complete with VCR beside the ornamental chair in which they reside.  Each story is prefaced by Curse grabbing a tape, saying something about the story and then playing it in the VCR.

We caught up with creators, Brockton McKinney and Bo Fader to talk about DeathCurse.

Horror News Network: How did you come up with the concept for DeathCurse?

Bo Fader: Can i just preface this with the fact we're already two beers in?  That and the fact I don't remember how we came up with the book...

Brockton Mckinney: ...

Bo Fader: Brock?

Brockton McKinney:  We were on our way back from the Charlotte Comic Con. We...might have had a few beers in us then, as well. The idea came from our wanting to do something that would be episodic, that incorporated our love of bad VHS. We worked the entire trip on the concept for the narrators, Curse and Mr Latch and some loose story ideas. Then we asked some of our artist friends, guys we'd really been wanting to work with, if they'd like to join up.

Bo Fader: We tried to customize every story for the artist, make 'em fun for everybody.

Brockton McKinney: Yeah, we asked "What's something you've always wanted to draw?"

Bo Fader: Most said: Dinosaur sex.

Brockton Mckinney:  Actually, that was just Jason, but he begged for it SO much...

Bo Fader: So that's it? That's the explanation?

Brockton Mckinney:  Yes... yes  I suppose it is.

Bo Fader: Swell...next question?

Horror News Network: Who are the rest of the creators involved in this comic?

Brockton Mckinney: Bridgit Scheide, Chris Moreno, Jason Strutz, Larkin Ford and Jonas Britt.  A gaggle of badasses.

Bo Fader: Each one more phiscally deformed than the last....

Brockton Mckinney: ...okay..sure. That means Brij is okay but Jonas...

Bo Fader: Is a horrible creature with filthy visage--

Brockton Mckinney: And your husband.

Bo Fader: My one and only FOREVER.

(laughing)

Horror News Network:
Can you tell us a bit about each of the stories in the book?

Bo Fader: Three beers, one scotch.

Brockton Mckinney: For those of you keeping score at home.

Bo Fader: (ordering) Two more of these! And whatever Brock wants...

Brockton Mckinney: Okay, the first story is Ms Scheides. It involves a boy scout trip gone very wrong. Bridgit really annihilated it. It's my most favoritest stuff from her ever, and I'm a huge Kindle AND Brother Nash fan.

Bo Fader: Google it, suckas! And the second tale is an unlikely yarn involving a vampire car wreck and killer vacuum. It's Morenos story and its something that the three us have been laughing about for years!

Brockton Mckinney: (laughing) Vampire car wreck. That shit is still funny. Chris is our boy. We know him from waaaayyyy back, and always looked for a project we could all be a part of. He's got Zombie Dickheads out right now and you guys have an awesome interview up with him here at ComicMonsters. READ IT, GHOULIACS!!!

Bo Fader: I can't read but I enjoyed his drawerings.

Brockton Mckinney: He's an excellent drawer....and yeah so...the third story brings in one of the overall themes of the book. There is this cul-de-sac at the end of limbo, right? And ALL the horror host in our little world live there, in these individual houses surrounding the block. Our guys Latch and Curse get a visit from one of the other hosts in this particular story.

Bo Fader: Jason Strutz tears that one up. He's from Firetower Studio's, check out their stuff, you'll thank me. Oh also it's our chance to introduce Curse and Latch's sexy neighbor Miss Haven and her oversized pet zombie Larry.

Brockton Mckinney: Sexy gore? Nuff said?

Bo Fader: Indeed! Fourth story is probably most 'Tales from Crypt' of them all. It classic misdirection with a twwwwwist. Larkins art sells the shit outta this one.

Brockton Mckinney: He murders it. Pun intended?

Bo Fader: You asking me?

Brockton Mckinney: No.

Bo Fader: ...

Brockton Mckinney: Larkin Ford is my partner-in-crime with our other Lost Story Studios book, Ehmm Theory. First issue's out now, we are quite proud out it.

Bo Fader: It's good. I hate to admit it, but it's real good.

Brockton Mckinney: You do hate to.. so, thank you.

Bo Fader: I do it for Larkin. He's awesome.

Brockton Mckinney: I concur.

Bo Fader: Next question.

Brockton Mckiney: Wait! There's one more story!

Bo Fader: Yeah!  It's Jonas masterpiece!

Brockton Mckinney: It is AND it's Jonas' first comic. He's actually our badass tattoo artist. He and Bruce White, which coincidentally you should look up immediately.

Bo Fader: If you dig incredibly fantastical horror and sci-fi paintings on black velvet

Brockton Mckiney: Which I do.

Bo Fader: So look it up.

Brockton Mckinney: I will.

Bo Fader: Whadda ya think?

Brockton Mckinney: As implied moments ago, it's spectacular.

Bo Fader: I'm glad you like it... but we digress...

Brockton Mckinney: Jonas story is the linch pin of the book. It's the origin of our narrators, Curse and Latch. Gory, wicked shit. We had to put it at the end so you wouldn't puke till you finished the book.

Bo Fader: I puked a bit just now...thinking about it.

Brockton Mckinney: Oh. Hmm. No more scotch. (ordering) Gimme something that will make him less likely to throw up.. .

Bo Fader: I.P.A.

Brockton Mckinney: 5 Beers, 2 scotch. Next question!

Horror News Network: What can fans expect in terms of blood and guts from this comic?

Brockton McKinney and Bo Fader: YES!

Brockton Mckinney: It's gory, man. I mean, it's just a kickass 80's horror movie told sequentially. If there wasn't blood and boobs, i would consider it a failure.

Bo Fader: Vampire car wreck!!!

Brockton Mckinney: He's got a point, you know. Vampire car wreck: taste the DeathCurse flavor...

Horror News Network: When is DeathCurse scheduled to be released?

Brockton McKinney: Nov 5th and 6th ONLY at the NC ComiCon. Alan Gill and the guys at Ultimate Comics in Chapel Hill are sponsoring the book. Alan is the reason you're reading about this comic. He put out Ehmm Theory as well, but we had that book done and he liked what he saw. All I had to pitch for DeathCurse was the name and concept. Alan dug it and TA-DA...NC ComiCon exclusive. After the show is over we'll be offering the book though the Lost Story Studio site and anywhere else that would like to carry it. BUT get it signed by EVERY DeathCurse artist at the Con.

Bo Fader: The entire DeathCurse crew in one place? That sounds like trouble...

Brockton Mckinney: Trouble with a captial "D".

Bo Fader: For 'dookey'?

Brockton Mckinney: What? No! For DeatCu--You know what? Yes. D for Dookey.

Bo Fader: Poop play?

Brockton Mckinney: Next question! Go! Hurry!

Horror News Network: Where can our readers find out more about DeathCurse?

Brockton McKinney: http:///loststorystudio.com and http://www.nccomicon.com/ or facebook Bo and I.

Horror News Network: In closing, what would you like to say about DeathCurse?

Brockton Mckinney: DeathCurse is a comic for every horror fan out there that loved watching b-movie fright flicks in the 80's. If you remember every scary cover of every VHS at the video store, this book's for you. If you have ever stayed up super late just to scare the hell outta yourself with some crazy movie you KNEW would give you nightmares, this books for you. If you loved the old EC comics and the creepy-ass covers that made you HAVE to pick up the comic, this books for you. More Return of the Living Dead than Night of the Living Dead, this sucker has gross ghouls, monsterous freaks, hot chicks, cool cars, cursed witches and we play it all for some of the most twisted laughs since Jim Wynorski picked up a camera.

Bo Fader: And if you're too young to remember VHS then you're in for a wild treat right down blood fart alley.

Brockton Mckinney: WHAT?!!!

Bo Fader: Yep. That's what they're in for.

Brockton Mckinney: Well, i mean, I'm with you on the wild treat but...why a...blood fart?

Bo Fader: I did that? I guess I ate something that disgreed--

Brockton Mckinney: I disagree with the direction this conversation is heading.

Bo Fader: I'm heading to the piss room in like 5 seconds.

Brockton Mckinney: Good. Get us drinks.

Bo Fader: Yup. I'm parched.

Brockton Mckinney:  By the way I just looked up Bruce White and bought a shitload of his stuff.

Bo Fader: I guess that's cool.

Brockton Mckinney: I mean, you told me to...

Bo Fader: Whatever.

Brockton Mckinney: I saw you had bought some too.

Bo Fader: Prove it!

(a brief scuffle ensues)

Brockton Mckinney: Okay, stop. Bobo! What's DeathCurse gonna do when it comes to YOUR town?

Bo Fader: Okay, if it's...if you're a boy, it's gonna blow your nuts...

Brockton Mckinney: Off?

Bo Fader: Everywhere.

Brockton Mckinney: And if it's girl?

Bo Fader: It'll melt your tits

Brockton Mckinney: WOW. I feel like we might be doing more harm than good at this point...

Bo Fader: Yes!

Bo Fader and Brockton Mckinney:  Next question!
