Hellvis interview with Patrick Vitagliano
The character Hellvis is a Zombie, re-animated by Papa Legba and made to serve as a soldier of vengeance, killing (and feeding on....) people who deserve to die. Because sometimes, Karma isn't enough.
Senior Editor, Christine Caprilozzi caught up with creator, Patrick Vitagliano, to talk about Hellvis.
Horror News Network: How did you come up with the concept for Hellvis?
Patrick Vitagliano: Well, I guess the Hellvis character stems from something deep inside me, an innate need to see REAL justice served. We live in a world where bad people routinely get away with horrific crimes on a daily basis, slipping through the cracks of a flawed justice system on technicalities, or using power, position, and wealth to buy their way out of it, not to mention those who never get caught.
As much as I want to believe in Karma, the truth is, sometimes it’s just not fast enough. Sometimes it needs a little help.
I think we’ve all fantasized about serving up some cold blooded justice at one time or another. Hellvis is that vehicle, as he is not hard-bound by law, or human fallibility. He’s that guy from the movies, doing the stuff we all dream of doing, but can’t. He’s Clint Eastwood’s Dirty Harry or Charles Bronson from Deathwish……except he’s “Undead”, which gives him certain powers and abilities we humans only get to fantasize about.
Horror News Network: Can you tell us about the main characters in the comic?
Patrick Vitagliano: Hellvis is the main character. He is an undead soldier of vengeance. There are a few other characters that will be introduced in the first issue, “Inception”, where we learn his backstory, (His birth mother Elwyssa, as slave on a Louisiana Cotton plantation. Armitage Shanks, the plantation owner, a real piece of human garbage, who rapes Elwyssa, inadvertently spawning a child, who later becomes Hellvis. Papa Legba, a Voodoo deity and gatekeeper to the spirit world, responsible for re-animating Hellvis. Legba will be an integral part of the series, while the other’s will be more tied to the first issue only.
There are also some very cool female roles coming up in issues 2 and 3, but I’m keeping tight-lipped about them for now.
Horror News Network: What can readers expect from this comic in terms of blood and guts?
Patrick Vitagliano: Oh, there WILL be blood, guts, and all of the gratuitous gore you know you love.
Horror News Network: Who is the rest of the creative team involved in this comic?
