We caught up with writer, Orlando Harding, to talk about Night Stalker.
Horror News Network: How did you come up with the concept for Night Stalker?
Orlando Harding: The idea of Night Stalker came from a want to have a leading chararacter that was lethal but with a twist. I thought that it would make the story a lot more interesting by making the lead character female. We usually see men in these types of deadly world ending roles and I wanted Night Stalker to posess all those attributes and make her more lethal than any man. The last step in pushing the envelope was to make her African American. This type of role is rarely, if ever, given to a woman of color. One thing people will say is that they have never seen a character like hers before and I hope that this will addd to peoples interest in the book.
Horror News Network: Can you give us more information on the main character Dyana?
Orlando Harding: Dyana is absolutely vicious and fears nothing. She is the kind of predator that a terminator would admire and strive to be like. However, her intellect matches her brutality and she does not mind getting "dirty" or bloody in order to get the job done-she actually prefers it. She is rather sadistic and tells a creature that she is going to ensure that he is gelded. She wants to do it because it will be fun-not because he has too. In order for her to stalk, engage and then overpower these illusive creatures she really has to be on top of her game. She has an arsenal of weapons that she uses but refers one over all-the "joy" stick. The cool thing about her is that she can keep her business and personal life separate. She's the kind of girl that can go to a bar and have some cocktails right after chasing the creatures of the underworld up, down and under the streets of San Francisco. She is absolutely relentless and will not let anything stand in her way whether it be a creature of light or dark. After working and playing hard, she likes to go home to her flat in the Sunset district of San Francisco and unwind by watching a movie or two. She blends in well and keeps up appearances giving no clues about her true mission or identity.
Horror News Network: Can you talk a bit about the types of monsters and demons we will see in this book?
Orlando Harding: In this book you will see her chase an eight foot Warlock all around town and during this chase seen a small area of the city is destroyed including a Muni city bus. She will discover what it fells like to become the prey and will have to deal with an assassin called a Whisper. Dyana will actually have to go head to head with Death itself and will understand that when dealing with the politics of Heaven and Hell that nothing is out of bounds and that both sides play for keeps. The creatures that she will face will push her to the limits and she will then discover that the world that she lives in is not so black and white and she will be forced to explore the gray areas.
Horror News Network: Can you talk a bit about the balance of light vs. dark?
Orlando Harding: The balance of light and dark will be off balance and we will exploit the gray areas. How can a creature of dark have a best friend that is a creature of light? In the end the reader will not be sure as to who is "good" and who is "bad". Good people have to sometimes to bad things and bad people sometimes do good things. It's the labels of “good" and "bad" that will be explored and then challenged. They are not as "black" and "white" as many of us try to portray them to be. This conflict will force her to make some hard decisions and will ultimately cause her to become a Pariah.
Horror News Network: What can we expect from this book in terms of blood guts and horror?
Orlando Harding: There will be blood! But in regards to guts and horror; as the stories progress she will become conflicted and escape it by fully embracing her dark side. Once this happens it will be total onslaught and no creature including human beings will be safe from her wrath. She will destroy creatures of light and dark with equal brutality and will fall deep into the abyss of her anger.
Horror News Network: How often will this book be published?
Orlando Harding: Right now it is just a one shot to get peoples reaction and if it is positive and supportive I will work to make it a monthly or bi monthly book.
Horror News Network: Where can our readers find out more about Night Stalker?
Orlando Harding: www.nightstalkercomic.com
