Dean Hsieh talks Aeon of the Dead

Aeon of the Dead is a webcomic currently ranked 1st in the latest Zuda contest.

We talked to the creator, Dean Hsieh, about the comic.

The Big Bad Wolf: Can you give our readers a synopsis of Aeon of the Dead?

Dean Hsieh: It's been thirteen years since the Last Pandemic. Now, pockets of humanity endure in the flyover states of rural America, waging a constant war for survival. To make matters worse, the undead enemy is beginning to evolve. In this desolate and dangerous landscape, a lone woman known only as Omaha wanders with her trusty horse and a pair of samurai swords, waging her own private war against impossible odds. This is a perilous journey across post-apocalyptic America where there will be death around every corner and surprises at every turn.

Aeon of the dead web comicThe Big Bad Wolf: Who are the main characters?

Dean Hsieh: Omaha and her horse Kenny are of course the major characters in the story. There will also be other important characters introduced very soon: a wandering self-styled "zombologist" named Ferran that I'm getting a big kick out of writing. The little boy Joey and various characters that we'll meet at the small camp of Hovenweep will also become major characters.

The Big Bad Wolf: Can you give us a little more information on Omaha?

Dean Hsieh: Hmm, well the main point of her character is that she's tough and mysterious, so I don't want to give away too much! Needless to say much of her history will be revealed little by little as the story progresses.

The Big Bad Wolf: How did this zombie outbreak occur?

Dean Hsieh: Part of the idea of setting the story in the near-future is that the characters don't really know how the outbreak happened. As we meet the characters on the journey, everyone will have their own theories as to what happened to cause the pandemic.

The Big Bad Wolf: What can we expect from this comic in terms of blood and gore?

Dean Hsieh: Oh plenty of it! As you can see from the introductory 8 pages I'm not exactly squeamish about blood and there will be more to come... all in the service of the story of course.

The Big Bad Wolf: How often is this web comic updated?zombie webcomic

Dean Hsieh: If my comic can win the Zuda contest, it will be up to Zuda when it will start to get published on the site, but I expect once it starts running that it will be updated with an episode every month or so.

The Big Bad Wolf: What other comics or movies inspired you to make this web comic?

Dean Hsieh: I was inspired by a lot of the movies that I enjoyed when I was young, the monster movies and the post-apocalyptic adventure stories... the obvious ones would be Romero's zombie movies, the Mad Max series, and even Sergio Leone's westerns. Also influencing my style are the new Japanese action/horror films as well as the new resurgence of zombies seen in movies like 28 Days Later, of course all those things were in my subconscious when I created the story.

The Big Bad Wolf: Who's the rest of the creative team involved in this web comic, or do you handle all the chores yourself?

Dean Hsieh: I actually handle the entire thing myself, from the writing down to the last bit of art, I find that's one of the most rewarding things about doing comics is that you can do it yourself and not involve a giant team of people. However I don't think I'll be getting much sleep once this thing starts running.

The Big Bad Wolf: Where can our readers find out more about Aeon of the Dead?

aeon of the deadDean Hsieh: It is currently one of the ten entries in this month's Zuda comic competition, sponsored by DC Comics. Depending on the votes and how well it is received, one of the comics will be picked as the winner to continue publication on the Zuda site. In addition to the entry pages, there is a little bit of production work posted on my website: Depending on what Zuda allows I may keep posting new production work on my site, and of course tune in to the new episodes on Zuda if its picked as the winner.

The Big Bad Wolf: In closing, what would you like to say to our readers about Aeon of the Dead?

Dean Hsieh: Please take a look at the introductory 8 pages running on the Zuda site: If you like what you see please take a minute to sign up to the Zuda site and put in your vote and make it a favorite... the only way this comic can continue is with your support and win the Zuda competition in the end of December. Thanks for your time!

The Big Bad Wolf: Thank you for your time, Dean. Best of luck with Aeon of the Dead!
