We
talked with writer, Miles Gunter about the book being published by Antarctic
Press.
The Big Bad Wolf: Can you give our readers
a synopsis of Demon Cleaner?
Miles Gunter:
The human power elite have forked over a million bucks a plate to dine at a black market restaurant. The main course: demons freshly summoned from the bowels of Hell. Eating their diabolical flesh will grant these people powers beyond human comprehension. But when things go horribly wrong, the demons ravage the restaurant patrons and spill out into the night. And so the powers that be call upon the Demon Cleaner, an unholy force in the guise of a man, whose twin hand cannons are the only thing that can stop our planet from turning into an all-you-can-eat buffet for these Satanic fiends!
The Big Bad Wolf: Who are the main characters?
Miles Gunter:
The Main Character is the Demon Cleaner. He is a natural force of hell- much like a hurricane or an earthquake. But designed to preserve balance on Earth. Part of the torment of existing as a demon in hell is the knowledge that if you got to Earth you could unmake it the way that you or I can make scrambled eggs. It would be so easy. That frustration that they feel is a part of their individual suffering as demons. If by the grace of Satan, they do figure out some way to escape hell, then Demon Cleaner is activated to remove their presence from our world before they annihilate civilization.
Demon Cleaner is assisted by the Operator, a woman who guides him towards his targets. She has an air of mystery like the best women do.
The Big Bad Wolf: Can you
give us a little more information on the sorcerer in the book?
Miles Gunter:
The Sorcerer has been cannibalizing demons and doing lots of cocaine. This combination can only lead to really bad things.
The Big Bad Wolf: How many
different types of demons are involved in this story?
Miles Gunter: There are 3 demons in the story. In terms of threat level it's big, bigger, biggest.
The Big Bad Wolf: What types of powers do the demons have?
Miles Gunter:
D Cleaner's first target is a shape shifter: sort of a cross between John Carpenter's the Thing and the T-1000 in Terminator 2. It can absorb anything and take on that object's characteristics. When DCleaner first encounters it at a fruit and vegetable stand, the creature has absorbed watermelons, becoming a watermelon version of Cujo. It can also increase its size by absorbing large objects..
The Big Bad Wolf: Can you tell us more about this Demon Cleaner agency?
Miles Gunter: They are invisible, operating outside of what humans can perceive. Our brains aren't equipped to register their existence. You'd have an easier time selling a Ferrari to a haunted house than trying to figure these guys out.
The Big Bad Wolf: What can we expect from this
book in terms of blood or gore, etc?
Miles Gunter: My goal is to always present violence and gore in a fresh way. With Demon cleaner I wanted to convey an elegance to the violence, like in the films of Dario Argento and Brian DePalma but with the kind of muscular intensity of something like Die Hard or Robocop.
The Big Bad Wolf: Who's the rest of the creative team involved in this comic?
Miles Gunter:
The artist is Victor Santos. He's a very prolific writer/artist
who has been called the Quentin Tarantino of Spanish comics. Demon Cleaner
is our second collaboration. The first was Zombee- the story of a Samurai,
a Ninja and a Zen Monk who team up to battle the undead in feudal Japan.
We released that two years ago through Image Comics.
The
cover artist is Kelsey Shannon, my collaborator on Yeti vs Vampire and Bastard
Samurai.
The Big Bad Wolf: Is this an ongoing, or mini series?
Miles Gunter:
Demon Cleaner is a three issue series. It's a self contained story with a beginning, middle and an end.
The Big Bad Wolf: How much is the book and when is the release
date?
Miles Gunter: The
book is $3.99. The first issue will be out in March. The second and third
will ship in April and May. The entire book is finished so it shouldn't
be late.
The Big Bad Wolf: Where can our readers find out more about Demon
Cleaner?
Miles Gunter: They
can check out www.milesgunter.blogspot.com.
The Big Bad Wolf: In closing, what would you like to say to our
readers about Demon Cleaner?
Miles Gunter:
If you enjoyed Quantum of Solace, then I think you'll really dig Demon Cleaner. It has an elegant James Bond quality but taken to a wilder extreme. I feel it's important to also mention that this book is NOT Hellboy. It has similar themes but we've tried to approach them from our own individual perspectives which are informed by completely different stuff. We're of the Terminator generation. We like to do stuff big and so loud you go blind.
The Big Bad Wolf: Thank
you for your time, Miles. Best of luck with Demon Cleaner!
