One, Two Freddy's coming for you,
Three, Four, better lock your door,
Five, Six, grab your crucifix,
Seven, Eight, gonna stay up late,
Nine, Ten never sleep again.
No
matter how many times you hear that, it still gives you the creeps, doesn't
it? We talked with writer Chuck Dixon about his new project for DC Comics,
Nightmare on Elm St.
TheBigBadWolf: Hi Chuck. How did you become involved in the project?
Chuck Dixon: My editor at
Wildstorm asked me which of the three new Line properties I’d be
interested in. It was Nightmare hands down. It’s by far my favorite
horror series.
TheBigBadWolf: Have you been a fan of the franchise?
If so, which movie stands out as your favorite?
Chuck Dixon: The first one
set a tone that none of the others really rose to. It was mean and suspenseful
as hell. I also like the third movie a lot ‘cause it begins to explore
more of Freddy’s world and how it works. The others are bit repetitive
and “jokey” for my taste.
TheBigBadWolf: What can we expect from this
series?
Chuck Dixon: Heavy suspense
and lots of playing with reality and perceptions. I love the juxtpos of
the sleeping and waking world to create tension. There’s gonna be
tons of tricks to fool the reader as to whether the principle characters
are in a nightmare or awake.
The emphasis is on three issue arcs that are kind of movies within themselves.
We will have recurring characters throughout but expect to see fresh victims
every three issues and a new plot element.
TheBigBadWolf: Will this book be an ongoing title,
or limited?
Chuck Dixon: It’s
planned as an ongoing.
TheBigBadWolf: Will we see any appearances of
past survivors from the movies?
Chuck Dixon: I’d like
to have some in here but haven’t gotten clearance yet for that.
TheBigBadWolf: Will we see plenty of blood and
guts?
Chuck Dixon: We’re
not going for gore so much as for suspense. But there should be enough
here for gorehounds.
TheBigBadWolf:
Is Freddy restricted to kids on Elm St. or will he spread the
horror around?
Chuck Dixon:
He’s restricted to Springwood which, like so many towns, has grown
since we last visited.
TheBigBadWolf: Will Freddy get his rematch against Jason, or possible
a match with Leatherface?
Chuck Dixon: That one I
do not know. But I’ll bet they’re planning one.
