Rabid comic book Interview
Jason Burns talks about the comic and the possible movie

RABID Interview

When a canine infected with a mutated Rabies virus escapes from a lab, a small town is flipped on its head as the disease spreads into the human population, causing family, friends and neighbors to turn on each other. Now one sheriff has to do whatever it takes to keep his family safe as the town slips into hell.

We spoke with writer, Jason Burns, about the project.

RabidThe Big Bad Wolf: Tell us about the comic, RABID.

Jason Burns: Rabid is basically the horror movies I fell in love with as a kid put in graphic novel format. It's a story about a mutated Rabies virus that crosses over into the human population and causes everyone it infects to turn into the human version of Cujo. It's not meant to be a real thinker of a story, but instead, a fun ride for people to escape with. The graphic novel version of a popcorn movie.

The Big Bad Wolf: Can you give us a brief bio of some of the main cast?

Jason Burns: Like any superb villain, RABID is a seductive contradiction of true evil. Charming, genteel... and, ultimately, extremely dangerous. He's akin to a mysterious soldier-of-fortune, cursed and bound from Hamelin, before, and beyond. By contrast, Sean is our latter-day hero. Goth-looking, talented and bullied into a shell. There are echoes of Columbine here, and the absolute red flags of going down revenge's road. To think that it's been a few years since that tragedy, and the way some kids treat one another is even WORSE than before.

The Big Bad Wolf: Who are the main characters in this book?

Jason Burns: The story centers on the sheriff of a small New England town and his family and friends. People come and go in the story whether they die off or turn into one of the rabid, but for the most part we following along with the sheriff as he attempts to keep his family and friends safe as everything around him turns to big, festering pile of chaotic shit.

The Big Bad Wolf: Can you give us a little more insight on the virus itself, like what caused it?

Jason Burns: The book begins at an animal testing facility where we learn experiments are being done on canines and a virus referred to as CTX. It's clear that the virus is dangerous from the start, especially when one of the dogs in question escapes from its cage. Ultimately though, the story centers on the aftermath and not the source, though we do finally meet the mastermind behind it at the end of the book. For me, when it comes to horror, I sometimes find things scarier when all of the answers aren't plugged in for me, so I did leave some open ended questions for the readers to play with.

The Big Bad Wolf: How is the virus passed?

Rabid virus

Jason Burns: I don't want to give away too much because that does play into the end of the story, but for the most part we focus on the bites and having the virus pass through the saliva.

The Big Bad Wolf: What happens once people get the virus?

Jason Burns: Those individuals infected by the virus become a sort of bloodthirsty zombie driven by instinctual wants and desires. They're no longer your neighbor and friend but something more animalistic. Like I said It's a popcorn story. haha

The Big Bad Wolf: How did you come up with the idea for this book?

Jason Burns: I was watching the original Birds one days and liked the idea of animals going ape shit, so I decided to take that vibe and do something as a cross between that and Night of the Living Dead. The funny thing is, I wrote this so long ago Before the zombie trend hit That I almost didn't release it at all. But, I really feel like there's room for more of this kind of storytelling seeing I continue to enjoy this genre, so I found an artist and moved forward with it.

The Big Bad Wolf: This graphic novel is such an interesting tale, have any movie companies contacted you about the project yet?

RabidJason Burns: I'm actually working with a well known producer right now to adapt it as a feature script.

The Big Bad Wolf: Who is the rest of the creative team on this book?

Jason Burns: Guy LeMay is the entire art team pencils, inks and colors. He's a hell of a guy and I really enjoy his unique style, so I'm hoping everyone else digs it as well, because he deserves a lot of respect and attention for what he does. He's also a hell of a SDCC drinking buddy So look out for us at the pubs this year!

The Big Bad Wolf: Where can fans find out more information about RABID?

Jason Burns: The Viper Comics mini site will be up and running soon, so fans should check out www.vipercomics.com for information and previews.

The Big Bad Wolf: In closing, what would you like to say to our readers about this book?

Jason Burns: Give it a shot. If you like it Great. If you hate it I didn't write it. Haha.
