| John Redfeather lost his
family in an accident. He then became bonded with a great wolf spirit, giving
him the ability to transform into a werewolf.
We
spoke with writer, Sean Collins, about SPIRIT OF THE WOLF.
The Big Bad Wolf: Can you give us a synopsis
of SPIRIT OF THE WOLF?
Sean
Collins: Spirit of the Wolf is about a native american
man named John Redfeather, that goes on a trip with is family to the reservation
while on their way back there in a terrible accident resulting in the
loss of his family and him being bonded with a wolf spirit, before long
he realizes that he can transform into a kind of werewolf but not the
traditional European type that is a feral beast, in fact he remains very
much in control of him self. He now tries to deal with the loss of his
family and the occasional supernatural threat that may arise.
The Big Bad Wolf: How did you come up with the idea for this book?
Sean
Collins: Well, the original idea for this book I had ,
had about 7 years ago but never did anything with it, then flash forward
to about 3 years ago I was trying to get some books together for Wizard
World Chicago & well I remember the original plot I had and decided
to work with it a bit and well the rest is history (note the book didn't
appear that year because of printer delays, but was originally released
last year in a very small run, but is slated for a release with a new
distributor)
The Big Bad Wolf: Being of Native
American heritage, are there any skin walker legends in particular that
have stuck with you over the years?
Sean Collins:
Funny thing is I can't remember ever hearing a story
about skin walkers, it's a very common myth that all native american tribes
have legends of Skin Walkers, now there are stories of shape shifters
or of people being transformed by spirits or medicine men, but the close
I've heard would I have to say would be a story about a man whom had 2
wives well his wives were very playful with the other men in the village
so to keep a better rain on them he moved them away from the village,
well after several weeks the women long to back in the village but knew
that as long as their husband lived they could not so the concocted a
plan to get rid of him, so one day they tricked him to the top of a great
hill by saying that they wanted to have a picnic, well once there they
pushed him over the hill and down he went and came to rest at the bottom
of the hill, the women thinking he was dead went back to the village and
told of how he was killed by a bear, the man barely alive was found by
a pack of wolves whom brought him this there Shaman, the great and powerful
old wolf sang an enchanted song that saved the mans live but in the process
transformed him into a half man & half wolf. he lived with his new
tribe for several months but one night while hunting he was spotted by
members of his old village and was chased they tried to kill him until
he spoke and told them of his story and how his wives had tried to killed
him, the village was so saddened a enraged that they punished the women
and begged for forgiveness & from that point on we called Wolves our
brothers.
The Big Bad Wolf: Can you give us a brief bio
of the main characters in the book?
Sean Collins:
Yes, his name is John Redfeather and he is just a regular guy
that just happens to be Native American. He grew up off the reservation
and in some ways very bitter about the racism and things that he has experienced,
otherwise he is a very proud and strong character with a lot of resolve.
The Big Bad Wolf: Will we see other creatures of the
night in this book?
Sean Collins:
Well I shouldn't let this out, but yes, there will
be a big two issue arc at the end of this years 6 issue run that will
feature a centuries old Vampire from Germany. That will start in issue
5 and wrap up in #6. Issue 3 has Coyote appearing to make John's life
hell & Haokah the Thunder being in Issue 4 (both of which come from
native lore)
.
The Big Bad Wolf: Are
you handling both the writing and art chores?
Sean Collins: Yes,
I'm both the artist and writer of the book. So far the only art chores
I have not done was the cover for issue 2. That cover was done by fan
favorite artist, Andy Lee!
The Big Bad Wolf: Is the book going to be in color or black and
white?
Sean Collins:
The book is 24 pages of B&W glory (laughs).
The Big Bad Wolf: Is this going to be a
mini series or ongoing?
Sean Collins: Iit's
going to be a bimonthly ongoing series. The trade paper back collecting
the first 6 issues will be coming out around the beginning of next year!
The Big Bad Wolf: When is the first issue
