| Monsterpocalypse is based on the action-packed, collectible miniatures game of the same name from Privateer Press. The era of monsters is upon us! Giant dinosaur-like creatures roam the southern hemisphere wrecking absolute destruction upon every city in their path. Now mankind has designed their own giant protectors, but will they be enough to save mankind or is our time on Earth up?
We talked with writer, Stephan Nilson, about Monsterpocalypse.
The Big Bad Wolf: Can you give our readers a synopsis of Monsterpocalypse?
Stephan Nilson: The quick and dirty is exactly what you think it is. The age of giant monsters and robots is upon us. Dinosaur-like creatures roam the Southern hemisphere. Monstrous creatures from space terrorize major cities with no purpose but absolute destruction, and now mankind is fighting back with gigantic robots. The robots of Globally United Advanced Research and Defense (G.U.A.R.D.) are manned by a four to five member crew. The initial story follows the crew of Sky Sentinel after they've had a less than spectacular first attempt at stopping one of these giant monsters (This is told in the issue 0 give away at San Diego Comic Con and Gen Con). The crew is adjusting to their bruised egos and a new commander.
The Big Bad Wolf: Can you describe some of the monsters we will see in this comic?
Stephan Nilson:
There is a reoccurring monster, Gorghadra that could be considered a rival for Sky Sentinel. He's one of the largest and deadliest of the Planet Eaters. In addition to Gorghadra, Sky Sentinel will also be mixing it up with gigantic dinosaur like creatures called, Terrasaurs and monstrous other-worldly abominations called the Lords of Cthul. But, G.U.A.R.D. isn't alone in their fight against these monsters. A new oddly agile giant robot appears out of nowhere and disappears just as quick, giving hope and causing concern for G.U.A.R.D. as they don't know what the motive for these new allies could be, but an enemy of my enemy.
The Big Bad Wolf: Will we see plenty of blood and guts in this comic book?
Stephan Nilson: There will be a lot of fighting and collateral damage, but most of blood and guts will be at the Monsters expense. Not to say there isn't a scene or two on a more personal scale for the characters that will get your blood (or theirs) pumping, but the violence of the book is kept to a PG-13 level. I don't think anyone will be disappointed.
The Big Bad Wolf: This comic is actually based on a miniatures game. Where can our readers find our more about that game?
Stephan Nilson: You can find out more about the game at Privateer Press' web site http://www.privateerpress.com/monsterpocalypse and the official Monsterpocalypse web site, http://www.monsterpocalypsegame.com. If you are going to be at San Diego Comic Con or Gen Con this summer, you can swing by the PP booth to get the preview issue of the comic as well as a demo on the game.
The Big Bad Wolf: Is this comic set to be an ongoing or mini-series?
Stephan Nilson:
Initially it's a mini-series that is set up to continue if the fans enjoy the book enough to keep us going. (hint, hint)
The Big Bad Wolf: When is the release date?
Stephan Nilson: The preview book will be handed out at San Diego Comic Con and Gen Con this summer, and the comic series hits the selves late September, about two weeks prior to the game's release. Now before too many people light the torches and grab their pitchforks because they won't be able to make it to either con, have no fear. The preview book will be available to read on the web the week issue one is released to comic book stores.
The Big Bad Wolf: How much is the book?
Stephan Nilson: The cover price for the book is $3.99.
The Big Bad Wolf: Who’s the creative team on the book?
Stephan Nilson: The story is plotted and scripted by Stephan Nilson (Batman Strikes, Justice League Unlimited and Smallville) and Jason Avery. Karl Waller (XMen, Wonder Woman and Motorhead) is at the helm for pencils with Rick Bonilla (Atomik Mike) handling inks. Kanila Tripp and Barry Williams are working the color magic, and our long time letter Charles Pritchett is bringing up the rear.
The Big Bad Wolf: Where can our readers find out more about Monsterpocalypse?
Stephan Nilson: Most information about Monsterpocalypse can be found at Privateer Press’ web site http://www.privateerpress.com/monsterpocalypse and the official Monsterpocalypse web site, http://www.monsterpocalypsegame.com. We will be "leaking" out more information about the factions, monsters and characters as the release date for the comic and game get closer.
The Big Bad Wolf: In closing, what would you like to say to our readers about Monsterpocalypse?
Stephan Nilson: Two things need to be mentioned; for comic readers and fans of giant monsters this is THE book for you. I'm a long time Gojira and Giant Majin fan (and hold a soft spot for Gamera and Mothra). This is a dream project for me to write and oversee. The amount of energy going into this project to make sure that it is so much more than just a licensed property turned comic. Whether you get involved in the game or not this comic will stand by itself as a great Giant Monster book. The other thing that needs to be mentioned is for the gamers. Many gaming companies have done gimmicks and giveaways to increase sales by giving away a rare collectors piece, but almost everyone of those offers force the reader to destroy their book to cut a coupon to receive their bonus. Privateer Press has come up with a brilliant new way to collect the comic, earn the exclusive figure and all without damaging your book. You can find all that information here, http://www.monsterpocalypsegame.com/comic.php#promo.
Well, I hope that answers all of your questions and convinces you to order a copy (or two) of Monsterpocalypse. We look forward to hearing everyone's response to the book.
Diamond Preview number for Monsterpocalypse #1 is JUL083912.
The Big Bad Wolf: Thank
you for your time Stephan. Good luck with Monsterpocalypse!
