| As viewers, we were all Kenny Johnson’s character “Heatseeking Dennis” for a few moments. Never before have we seen an introduction to a vampire movie quite like that. We spoke with Kenny Johnson
about his part in the Blade movie.
The Big Bad Wolf: Does it feel like it has been 10 years already?
Kenny Johnson:
No way. It is odd that ten years has gone by. It doesn't seem like it
has been that long ago. I still see it on the movie channels all the time.
It stands the test of time.
I am actually doing a show with Holly Hunter and
one of the guys that was on an episode did a lot of stunts for Wesley
in Blade. He came up to me and we were talking about the movie. It was
such a flashback.
The Big Bad Wolf: How did you get involved in Blade?
Kenny Johnson:
I signed with a new agency and they gave me the script. I knew Steve Norrington
was directing it. They told me it was a small part. There was more action
than dialogue. I remember auditioning with Steven and he was telling me
what he wanted me to do.
One of the reasons he said he picked me for the
part was after Blade came in and the massacre happened, Blade grabbed
me and moved my neck to the left and the right and I was the only actor
to relax my neck enough so that he can turn it. That stood out from the
other people.
I remember walking through the meat packing plant
and he just telling me to improvise, do whatever I wanted to do. It went
from being just a couple of lines to this great intro into the bloodbath.
The Big Bad Wolf: Did you have any idea who Blade was before the film; Did you read the old Tomb of Dracula comics?
Kenny Johnson: It
was explained to me, but I didn't.
The Big Bad Wolf: Let's talk about your character,
"Heatseeking Dennis". Since this was one of your first movie
roles, did you ever go home and tell your friends, "Holy shit, Traci
Lords just grabbed my crotch!"
Kenny Johnson: I never saw any of her movies! (laughs) That was probably good for me.
She was a really sweet girl. Everywhere we went she had wore a wig. At
2am, there were people coming out of bars screaming "I LOVE YOU TRACI!".
She grabbed my crotch like thirty times in a row and make the "Ooooooh" sound. It was pretty funny.
The Big Bad Wolf: Let's talk about the bloodbath scene. Kenny,
what was it like for you to do that scene. You were the main guy in that
scene, but truth be told, everyone in the audience visualized themselves
as you.
Kenny Johnson: I
had no idea that the cameras were going to follow me at all like that.
I was originally thinking, I hope the camera gets me once in a while in
this scene. I had no idea the scene was going to be lived through this
guy. It was a surprise to me. I felt very fortunate at that point.

I thought that if the movie was anything like the
intro scene, it would be a kick ass movie!
The Big Bad Wolf: How many days were you on set
for Blade?
Kenny Johnson:
It was about two and a half weeks. The blood
in the bloodbath scene is actually something else that was kind of bizarre.
They had told us that it was something that the make-up guys made and
it would be coming out of the sprinklers. Once the blood went down the
drain, that's it, it will be all new blood coming out. Later on we found
out they were recycling the blood and putting it back through. There were
a lot of people spitting. When you are doing the scene over and over,
and it is dripping down your eyes, it is kind of nasty.
The Big Bad Wolf: How was it working with Wesley Snipes?
Kenny Johnson: It
was good. I met Wesley on set and went to a party at his place in Marina
Del Ray afterwards.
The Big Bad Wolf: Looking back, what is your
favorite memory during filming?
Kenny Johnson:
(laughs) There is a scene where I am walking through
the club and Stephen Dorff comes walking through and bumps into me. He
looks at me like he wants to devour me. He is a smaller guy than me. In
between takes he came up to me and said "Listen dude, can you not
run into me so hard?" (laughs)
Getting punched was a crazy memory. Also, they
were kicking the living shit out of me. That was a crazy moment.
When I was dancing with Traci Lords and Arly Jover,
that really stuck out.
Oh yeah, when Traci kissed me before we went into
the club, that was a cool moment. (laughs)
The Big Bad Wolf: Do you
keep in touch with any of the cast members?
Kenny Johnson:
I bump into Traci periodically. I ran into her recently
in a mall. We went out to dinner once with a few friends, it was a fun
time.
The Big Bad Wolf: Did you get to keep anything
from the set?
Kenny Johnson:
I don't think I did. I did get some cool polaroid's
of us sitting outside with dry blood on us.
The Big Bad Wolf: Did
you think that Blade would be such an impactful film? It pretty much kicked
off all the Marvel movies, had two sequels, a tv show, and even inspired
other movies, like The Matrix.
Kenny Johnson:
I had no clue. When it came out, I think it really
opened a lot of people to new things.
The Big Bad Wolf: What
are you working on today?
Kenny Johnson:
I was doing The Shield for the last five years.
I am actually on a show starring opposite of Holly Hunter called Saving
Grace.
The Big Bad Wolf: How
can fans find out more information about you, and what you are currently
working on? Do you have a website or MySpace account?
Kenny Johnson:
I have www.KennyJohnson.com.
The Big Bad Wolf: Finally,
what would you like to say to all of the Blade fans reading this?
Kenny Johnson:
I am happy that I was able to play a small part
in it. It was the beginning of a trilogy. I felt lucky that I got to help
start it out.
The Big Bad Wolf: Thank you for your time Kenny!
Best of luck with everything in your future!
