Jason Moody talks SCARLET VERONICA
Horror has a hero and she is a sexy, zombie thrashing, monster smashing babe.

Scarlet Veronica Interview

SCARLET VERONICA, is a sexy, zombie thrashing, monster smashing babe. Through death she now has the power to fight the forces of darkness- Horror has a Hero.

We talked with creator/penciler/inker, Jason Moody, about SCARLET VERONICA.

The Big Bad Wolf: Can you give our readers a synopsis of SCARLET VERONICA?

Scarlet VeronicaJason Moody: SV (Scarlet Veronica) is basically about a girl that moves to the town of Raimiesville.  She goes through the normal woes of being the 'new kid in school', until she falls through the ice of a lake and dies.  She inadvertently opens a portal to 'Sheol'- the underworld (with the help of RA, a rogue Death Guardian, who wants to… rule the world…  bring hell to earth… y'know- typical bad guy stuff).  All kinds of monsters and baddies start coming through, but something has happened to Veronica…  With one foot in our world and one in the next- She's changed.   And now she's the one thing that Ra hasn't counted on, the one thing that can stop him and save Raimiesville.  She is… SCARLET VERONICA.  Heh, sorry- I kinda' went into 'marketing' mode there.  …Movie Trailer Voice Over 101.

The Big Bad Wolf: Who are the main characters?

Jason Moody: Well, there's Veronica- who really is a dual character. When she's in 'live mode' (yeah… we differentiate Veronica's two sides by calling them 'live mode' and 'dead mode' …too many video games I guess) she's shy, not sure of herself- she wants to do good, she wants to be funny and outgoing, but she's scared and reserved. But when she's in 'dead mode', it's like all her inhibitions are gone. She's smart and sexy, completely unreserved. Oh, and she can sense the undead and has the uncanny ability to bash in zombie skulls… So that helps.

There's Brian- he's Veronica's new (only) friend. He's with her when she gets her powers, and although she's not too sure… he thinks it's the coolest thing in the world. Brian is a self described geek- and he's a victim, only of his own wit. He's smarter and funnier than the jocks that pick on him- and they hate that. He's pretty much Josh Ruggles (the other creator of SV) lol. (can I use interweb slang in an interview? *shrug* …doh, I did it again)

There are 3 other main characters, but they don't show up until later issues… So I don't want to give too much away. I can say that in issue 2 a Reaper named 'Mr. Death' shows up and to join the fight.

The Big Bad Wolf: How did Scarlet Veronica get her powers?Scarlet Veronica comic

Jason Moody:
Ok, so- I've explained this a bit already, but I'll go into a little more detail. Her powers actually have a lot to do with the main villain RA. He's expecting Veronica to be his pawn, and she pretty much decides to try and stop him instead. Most of the magic and supernatural elements are channeled through the Libra MaVet (the book of the dead) which Ra obtains early on. Veronica's powers pretty much come from that. Really- what she is, and where her powers come from is kind of a twist… so. Shh.

The Big Bad Wolf: What other types of monsters will we see in this book?

Jason Moody: Ok, so- we freakin' LOVE monsters and crap. So here's the rundown- first there's the Sho'MaVet – they're the Guardians of Sheol. They basically make sure that beings from Sheol stay in there. They're like inter-dimensional police. Then there's Ra- who's an Ex-Sho'MaVet that's gone rogue. There are a couple zombies that are pretty fun. Zombie Santa… which is pretty much what it sounds like- a shopping Mall Santa that gets turned into a Zombie and ends up being kind of a 'boss' (again with the video games). There's Zombie Frank- who ends up not really being a zombie at all, but more like Frankenstein. He has a semi-truck tire chained to his back that he likes to hit Veronica with- lol. Finally there's a Behemoth. A big freakin' behemoth- literally, like the biblical beast. He's like a giant… winged lion monster… thing… that's blue.

The Big Bad Wolf: Is this an ongoing, or mini series?

Jason Moody: This is a miniseries.  For now.  lol- no we've talked to APE a little about doing a sequel and they've pretty much said they're in if we are, but nothing official yet.

The Big Bad Wolf: When is the release date?

Jason Moody: We're aiming for the week of Halloween. So I guess that would make it the 29th. Buy 50!

Scarlet VeronicaThe Big Bad Wolf: How much is the book?

Jason Moody: A million dollars. But I think we're doing a discount price of $3.50 for Comic Monsters fans.  Cuz you guys are boss.

The Big Bad Wolf: Who's the creative team on the book?

Jason Moody: Josh Ruggles and I are the Creators.  Josh designed a lot of the characters and I'm the Penciler/Inker on the book.  Justin Greathouse is the Colorist and Robert Barry is the writer.  We're part of a production company called Studiophile.  You can check out our respective DeviantArt pages if you REALLY wanna' see into our weird world.

The Big Bad Wolf: Has there been any interest in adapting Scarlet Veronica into a movie or cartoon?

Jason Moody: We're real interested… do you know anybody?  heh- actually I'm not sure if I'm really even aloud to talk about this, but oh well- Ape's met with a certain “Network” about SV and they seemed interested.  So that's cool, all we can do is keep our fingers crossed.  I guess they want copies of the book when it's printed.  But, that's the hope.  I'm actually an animator by day, so I would love to see SV as a cartoon.  I've done some short animated pieces for our trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdkNl1BWkqg)- and it was real neat to see her in action.  It's crazy cuz every day I read somewhere that some studio or network has bought the rights to another indy or small press comic.  Cartoon Network just signed 'Mice Templar' and a couple others, and Bryan Singer is adapting Radical Comics' 'Freedom Formula'… so the climate is right, I think.

The Big Bad Wolf: Any plans for the character to crossover with any other horror related characters?

Jason Moody: Nothing official now- but I have been talking to Buz Hasson, of 'The Living Corpse' a bit.  We're doing a pinup trade… so you never know.

The Big Bad Wolf: Where can our readers find out more about SCARLET VERONICA?

Jason Moody: ScarletVeronica.com

The Big Bad Wolf: In closing, what would you like to say to our readers about SCARLET VERONICA?

Jason Moody: All the issues are done so… no delays. Heh. And remember, issue 1 sets up the story, issues 2-4 are nonstop crazy zombie/monster action! Dumb ol' story telling… always gettin' in the way.

I hope you guys enjoy reading the book as much as we enjoyed making it. It's been a lot of fun.
