William Harms talks IMPALER

On the heels of the first trade paperback shipping in October, Top Cow Productions, Inc. is excited to continue to publish Impaler in a new ongoing series that launches in December, written by William Harms and drawn by British newcomer Matt Timson (Popgun).

We spoke with IMPALER writer/creator, William Harms about the project.

The Big Bad Wolf: For those that have not checked out the series before, can you provide a synopsis of Impaler?

William Harms: In a nutshell, vampires attack and destroy New York City. From there, they push west, intent on destroying first the United States and then the rest of the world. The only thing standing in their way is Victor Dailey, a retiring New York City homicide detective, and Vlad Dracula, the "impaler". Vlad has spent the last 500 years in limbo, waiting for the vampires to return, and he's not a happy camper.

William Harms: In most vampire fiction, Vlad is a vampire. I took that idea and turned it on its head by making Vlad a vampire hunter. I did a fair amount of research into the real-world Vlad, and although there's no doubt that he did some horrific things during his life, he also acted a buffer against the Ottoman Empire and fought hard to protect his people. In addition, he was a member of the Order of the Dragon, which was a real organization involved with the Church. So I pulled in that bit of history to help give Vlad some more depth as a character.

In terms of what Vlad can do, he has supernatural powers and is one mean son of a bitch. His only concern is destroying the vampires -- everything else, and I mean everything, is secondary to that.

The Big Bad Wolf: What can readers expect from the vampires in this series?

William Harms: The vampires are basically shadow creatures. None of the traditional "weapons" work, like garlic or crosses or holy water. You shoot them in the head, they die. But since they can turn into shadows, they're very hard to tag. Pure iron is the only thing that can always kill them, which is why Vlad carries around a big sword made of iron.

The Big Bad Wolf:
Will any supporting cast return from the first series?

William Harms: I don't want to spoil anything, so mum's the word. I will say that the trade ends with NYC getting nuked, so that should give you a pretty good idea of where things are heading.

The Big Bad Wolf: Recently Top Cow released some big news for this series, an ongoing title. What are your thoughts on that?

William Harms: I can't even describe how thrilled I am that Top Cow picked up Impaler. They really know their stuff, and they've gotten behind the series 100%. I hope to have a nice, long relationship with them.

The Big Bad Wolf: Will this be a monthly title?

William Harms: Our current schedule is for two months on, one month off, two months on, etc. The primary reason for that is that we want the book to come out on time, and since artist Matt Timson is doing all of the art, it gives him the time he needs to work his magic.

The Big Bad Wolf: Where will this ongoing series pick up?

William Harms: The new series starts about 90 minutes after the trade ends, so there's no real gap in terms of the story. I do want to mention that we worked really hard to make the first issue accessible to everyone, not just fans of the original series. No prior knowledge of the book is necessary.

The Big Bad Wolf: How much story do you have written out for this series?

William Harms: I'm putting the last bit of polish on # 5 tonight and starting # 6 next week. I have a rough outline of where the entire thing goes, and we're starting to nail down the nitty gritty of the next arc.

The Big Bad Wolf: When is the release date?

William Harms: The trade is scheduled to release on October 29th, and the first issue of the new series will hit stores sometime in December.

The Big Bad Wolf: How much is the book?

William Harms: The trade will sell for $14.99 and the series will sell for $2.99.

The Big Bad Wolf: Who's the creative team on the book?

William Harms: Matt Timson is the artist for the book. People are going to flip when they see his art.

The Big Bad Wolf: Where can our readers find out more about Impaler?

William Harms: Head on over the official Impaler site, which is at www.topcow.com/impaler.

The Big Bad Wolf: In closing, what would you like to say to our readers about Impaler?

William Harms: When Impaler first came out, it garnered a lot of acclaim (including being a finalist for the prestigious International Horror Guild Award), but the sales weren't quite what they needed to be. This book is my baby, and I'm thrilled that it's found a home at Top Cow. If you like horror comics, you won't be disappointed.

The Big Bad Wolf: Thank you for your time, William. Best of luck with IMPALER!
