Stephen Lindsay recently posted a cover teaser of an upcoming project that contains vampires, werewolves and more.
We caught up with Stephen and talked about his upcoming book, The Secret Cross.
The Big Bad Wolf: Can you give our readers a synopsis of THE SECRET CROSS?
Stephen Lindsay: The Secret Cross is an organization formed under Otto von Bismarck (as a part of the Allmacht Projekt) in 1869 in order to defend the future German Empire and Europe from supernatural threats and the like. Flash-forward to 1914, World War One. The Secret Cross is there, whether on the battlefields or behind the lines, fighting some of the nastiest horrors you will ever see with rifles, Lugers, flamethrowers, bayonets, swords and trench-knives. Soon they encounter an evil that few of them can comprehend which changes the course of their lives -- and history -- forever.
The Big Bad Wolf:
Who are the members of The Secret Cross, and do they have any special powers?
Stephen Lindsay: There are 9 main members of the Secret Cross unit that we will be following. They range from weathered old veterans who've seen it all to wet behind the ears rookies who's eyes are being opened to a world of horrors beyond their worst nightmares. But regardless of the fantastical beasts and creatures they will be facing, these are just ordinary men, capable of all the heroics (and horrors) within all of us.
The Big Bad Wolf: What types of monsters will we see them battle?
Stephen Lindsay: We'll be exploring our own variations on all of the classic monsters -- vampires, werewolves, etc. We're dealing heavily with the occult, so people can expect all manner of demonic creatures throughout the book.
The Big Bad Wolf: What can we expect from this book in terms of blood, guts and gore?
Stephen Lindsay: We're not pulling any punches with the gore. The battles during WWI was often close quarters trench warfare, so that's the approach we're taking. When the members of the Secret Cross encounter these creatures, it's going to be an up-close, bloody battle.
The Big Bad Wolf: Would this title be something fans of B.P.R.D. would be into?
Stephen Lindsay:
I certainly hope that we could attract B.P.R.D. fans. While a lot of what the B.P.R.D. deals with is steeped in the occult, I think we're taking a more hard-edged approach. Our book is a serious rumination on the nature of evil itself.
The Big Bad Wolf: Is this an ongoing or mini-series?
Stephen Lindsay:
I think that depends entirely on how well it is received. We have a very definite plan for the story we're telling, but that isn't to say that it can't continue after this story is told. We're only following one unit within the Secret Cross. There are countless others we can explore with different evils for them to face.
The Big Bad Wolf: Who will be publishing this book?
Stephen Lindsay:
We do not, as of yet, have a publisher for the book. Our plan is this -- we're creating a 12 page short story to showcase what the book is all about. We'll be posting this story online for free and using it to shop around to publishers. Hopefully having it online will allow us to grow a fanbase which will only make it easier to find an interested publisher.
The Big Bad Wolf: When is the expected release date?
Stephen Lindsay:
We don't have a release date yet, but we're hoping that the first 12 page story will be finished and posted online by the first of the year.
The Big Bad Wolf: How much do you expect the price of the book to be?
Stephen Lindsay: That's going to depend on the format with which we release it. Right now I believe the plan is to release it as a Graphic Novel, so the price would probably be between $15 - $20, depending on the final page count. But if a publisher swoops in and wants to release it as a mini-series in single issues, then the pricing will shift accordingly.
The Big Bad Wolf: Who's the rest of the creative team on the book?
Stephen Lindsay: The book is being co-written by myself and Steven Saunders. Steve is a genius when it comes to history, so he's really bringing a level of authenticity to this book that I could never in my wildest dreams achieve on my own. And the artist is Dominic Vivona (from the book Gunplay). Dom and I met at SPX (Small Press Expo) this year and hit it off right away. While at the Con I told him about this idea, and within an hour he showed me a drawing he did inspired by the idea that just blew me away. He's really bringing the goods to this book!
The Big Bad Wolf: Where can our readers find out more about The Secret Cross?
Stephen Lindsay: There isn't a lot out there about the book yet and we're really just starting to ramp up production on it. But as information comes in, it'll be posted on my website (www.captionsandballoons.com) and eventually on the book's own website (once we have it).
The Big Bad Wolf: In closing, what would you like to say to our readers about The Secret Cross?
Stephen Lindsay: The Secret Cross is really going to knock people for a loop. It's not just another monster rehash. There's a substance to it, as well as a truly sinister villain, that is going to cause people to question what the nature of evil truly is. Is it learned? Is it inherent? And ultimately, once released, can it ever be stopped?
The Big Bad Wolf: Thank
you for your time, Stephen. Best of luck with The Secret Cross!
