Escape from Wonderland #0

Escape from Wonderland #0
Story: Raven Gregory, Joe Brusha, and Ralph Tedesco
Art: Daniel Leister
Covers: Nei Ruffino
Letters: Crank!
Publisher: Zenescope
Release Date: July 1, 2009

“Escape from Wonderland #0” is, unfortunately for fans, the beginning of the end. But, lucky for us all, the ‘Wonderland’ team has used this opportunity to put together an issue that will make new and former readers anxious to see how this tale concludes. This is the very essence of an issue #0 and at $1.99 it shouldn’t be missed.

The new story is very short and limited, but a nice way to transition into the final part of the Wonderland trilogy; however, the issue opens with a nice “The Story So Far…” recap of all the relevant information that has moved the plotline along thus far. Long-time readers know that the storyline can get a little “loose” at times, so this is an excellent opportunity to catch up on all aspects of the tale and tie up some of those loose ends you may have been wondering about. It will also get new readers up to speed. But the real treat here is the character synopsis that is also provided. Not only does this prevent digging through your comic boxes to try to find out where you’ve seen that character before, but it actually provides better details. This issue is a real bonus to the series and a must-have for all fans.

Because most of this issue is a re-telling of events and characters, much of the art has been seen before, yet, it never seems to get old. This series has followed a strict code of ensuring all the main characters are eye-catching and jaw-dropping. The two non-exclusive covers by Eric Basaldua and Nei Ruffino are very nicely done and really do encourage buying both for collectors to have the complete image.

“Escape from Wonderland #0” appears to be the beginning of a tale every bit as compelling as the previously released “Return to Wonderland” and “Beyond Wonderland” series. This is a great issue for both long-time fans of the ‘Wonderland’ series and new readers who are looking to get on board. I am already looking forward to “Escape from Wonderland #1”.
