Bizarre Bazaar

Writer/Artist: John Dimes
Letters: PJ Perez

This is easily the weirdest, strangest comic (or anything really) that I have ever read. Bizarre Bazaar is collection of (excuse the pun) bizarre stories. This may appeal to some, but to others this comic may strike them as a whirlwind of confusion.

Overall the stories are good, but the problem here is what was stated above. Some are just so weird and so outlandish that it is hard to really wrap your head around what you are reading and truly get a story that you can understand. All that said, there is some fun to be had here hidden away underneath all the weirdness. Parts of these stories really do explore not just story telling but explore how you can use the comic book medium in ways other mediums are unable to utilize. Some pages use the lack of panels in such an interesting way. These pages that lack panels tend to give a feeling of being in a vast, void, ethereal place, that adds to the experience of the comic. The fact that the pages themselves independent of the story can evoke a feeling is a great thing in comics.

The stories in here have just about everything. Superheroes, psychics, you name it. Where the comic becomes actually scary is from the idea that everything is so new and so strange that you just don't know how to accept it. In addition to this the art really helps make this comic a very creepy experience.

The art of the comic is fitting. While it isn't the strongest art I've seen, it does help set the tone of the comic. In fact, I think this is the only kind of art that would fit the sheer craziness this comic is. Naturally, the comic is black and white which also helps set a mood. Color here would detract from this old school movie feel that this comic has.

What would have been nice to see is a little more clarity in the comic. Some stories you read and have a sense of “what did I just read” or finding yourself going back to re-read parts only to see that you haven't missed anything and you are kind of lost.

Who this comic is for is hard to tell. If you like things that are very off beat and different then you may want to try this comic out. If you prefer a more structured comic, a comic with a clear story line to it, this may be a little hard to get into. To sit and try to tell you what this is about would be an injustice, this is a comic you would need to experience yourself.
