"Season 8 ended with a bang when Buffy cut the world off from the hell dimensions and all supernatural influence. Great, right? Except Buffy has left her best friend, Willow, powerless, and ended the long line of vampire slayers, leaving her hated by the hundreds of girls who recently stood behind her. Newly relocated to San Francisco, Buffy can count on a fresh start, and focus on what she's good at--slaying."
I have a confession to make: I did not read one single issue of Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 8. Despite the massive sales, excellent reviews, and reveals big enough to make the 2010 "Best of...." list here at ComicMonsters.com, I have never had the opportunity to read the comics.
I did, however, watch all of the television shows when they were still in their first-run. As such, I wasn't sure what my role as a reviewer would be when I received a review copy of the first issue of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9. I didn't expect to be able to follow the story, or to still feel any attachment to the characters. However, I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to pick up the first book and enjoy it. The creators have done an excellent job of making this a simple jumping-on point to the Buffy tale. More than anything, I was impressed by how the Buffy spirit and character dialog still feels fresh after all this time. Not only did this book entertain me in itself, it has secured my decision to pick up the trades of Buffy Season 8.
After reading, then re-reading, the first issue, I understood my role: spread the word. Anyone who still has any love in their heart for the Buffy-verse from the original television show are going to want to give this book a chance, even if they completely missed Season 8.
