When I first looked at the Halloween “House of Mystery” issue, I must admit to having high expectations, just by the mere fact the cover is an awesomely creepy mask…that actually cuts out to be a mask. However, let’s move on to the real meat of the book here...
The usual suspects from the “House of Mystery” series appear in this book, with this evil mask as its centerpiece. The book has the main story of a drunken Halloween party, however, that wasn’t the highlight in my opinion. I particularly liked the “Constantine: Hellblazer” story in this one, written by Peter Milligan with artwork by Giuseppe Camuncoli and Stefano Landini. The artwork was particularly eerie and gruesome, which was a standout for me.
This issue also previewed “I, Zombie” (Chris Robertson and Michael Allard), which is set for release in 2010. Short preview, but peaks enough interest for people to be looking forward to the full release.
Also, notable, is the return of “Merv Pumpkinhead.” Nice to see him back in the mix somewhere.
The downfall with this book is the $4.99 price tag. A bit much, but if you can spare it out of your comic book budget for the week, it’s worth your while.
