The Art of BloodRayne
by: Jake Bilbao
I got into drawing comic books after I had a job
doing animation work in Manila. I got wind of Digital Webbing back in
2004 and posted some of my stuff in the artist's forum which landed me
some jobs and after a couple of years I drew a bit of attention from Mr.
Edward Dukeshire, owner of the site. He asked me if I was interested in
drawing the BloodRayne comic book, and I drew him an answer. Which can
be found here in my un-updated Blog: jakebilbao.blogspot.com.
He loved it and had me draw two BloodRayne short stories by Chad Lambert.
I knew nothing of the character before I was asked
to do the books, because for a while now, I have been avoiding playing video
games because it takes up a lot of my time and back in college days, I lost
a lot of my time playing games instead of going to classes, which eventually
led to me dropping out.
I did a bit of research into the game when I started
doing the actual pages. I love drawing strong women and drawing women
generally has always interested me. I wouldn't mind if Rayne took a bite
at me, she is just my type of Damphir. lol!
The most challenging thing I have to draw in Rayne's
attire is her weapons; those have to be exactly the same in every panel,
regardless of the view.
I start my drawings with some rough sketches and decide
which sketches I like. Then I start on the actual page. This helps eliminate
a lot of redraws. I know even the best pros out there start their drawing
process in this way.
After deciding on the layout I want, I loosely
draw in the skeletal system of the figure. When I am satisfied, I get
to do some of the details. I keep my lead a bit long so I could see what
I am drawing from a bit of distance. This also lets me draw a bit light,
so I could easily erase the lines I do not like.
After I draw in all the outlines, I loosely fill in
the black spots with a lighter lead, so whoever inks my work will clearly
distinguish the outlines from the blacks.
I just love to draw.
I am currently doing three issues of BloodRayne
Tokyo rogue which is written by Troy Wall.
