The making of Jazan Wild's Funhouse of Horrors
by: David Miller, Carlito Zuniga and Jazan Wild
David Miller
Hi, My name is David Miller and I'm an interior artist on Jazan Wild's
Funhouse Of Horrors along with Carlito Zuniga. Below is an example of
my proccess, I hope you enjoy.

Once I get the script I begin the storyboards. I do all
the storyboards first over 2-3 days and I try to stay as close as I can
to Jazan's intitial vision. At this stage I tend to be loose with the
line work. Although this portion is usually quick and dirty, more detail
was called for with the Fhoh thumbs becuase Carlito would also be using
them for his work. This method simply served to keep continuity in the
art throughout the book.
Jazan commenting on David's Storyboards Page 13 and 14:
"These are my two favorite pages by David in the book. They really
capture the 50's (Happy Days / Stand By Me / It ) feeling that I was going
for. Pay attention to the faces. There is so much being said in the characters
expressions that you barely need words."

My pencils are pretty heavily rendered here, at this stage
I've been known to get more relaxed on the detail when I'm going to be
inker. Getting the proportions and layout correct is crucial for me at
this point.
Jazan commenting on David's Pencils Page 13 and 14: "A
picture perfect example of great storytelling and one hell of an artist."

Here's where all the planning should really come together
when done successfully. Most of the rendering is done here in the inks
and is easily the most time consuming. Thicker lines are added, dirt,
avoiding evil tangant lines and just a really big effort to polish up
and make things pop off the page.

Here are the colored pages just before Jazan letters them.
The colors bring that final exclamation point of excitement to the art.
Well that's a bit of my proccess, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did
showing it! If you want to ask me anything further I can be reached through

Carlito Zuniga

The thing that came to mind when I saw the sketch in it's
early stage was that I directly knew how I wanted it look. I like how
David builds up his sketches. The way he draws and creates his "raw
sketches" has such energy, in a way they are like a finished pieces.
Therefore I must say that among the inspirations for this pinup of mine,
would be David Miller's original storyboard.
Jazan: "Here is the storyboard for the last page of
Funhouse. David Miller is just awesome at storyboards, in fact the best
I've ever worked with when it comes to storytelling. I would call up Miller
and just tell the story like as if we were sitting around a campfire.
Then I'd wait and watch the storyboards roll in. David would always add
his own twist on things, which is why I leave the lettering until after
the storyboards are done. Sometimes the art cries out to say something
different than what I set out to do. I just listen and go with it."

When I started on the shape of the character I wanted him
to be thin but still athletically built, even though he is an old man.
The animalistic or monstrous part of him I wanted to hide a bit and make
it feel like it was creeping out of him. I didn't want to give away all
the goodies of the character. It has to be a little mysterious.
Jazan: "To me this page is Carlito Zuniga at his best.
He takes the storyboard and adds his own magic to the mix. Monsters should
be Carlito's middle name."

Then of course Jazan had this idea in the head, and together
with his idea and mine we vibed off of each other and out of that, came
this piece. A delightfully wicked character I must say! Ha Ha!
Jazan: "The inks on this is by Carlito. What a great
screaming in your face closer to the book! As a team David Miller, Carlito
Zuniga, and I hit a homerun with this book. It was teamwork, with that
feeling I used to get while playing in a band. We made a great song that
none of us alone could have done. This book ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
