The making of Plan 9 From Outer Space Strikes Again - by: Giovanni Timpano

Hi, my name is Giovanni P. Timpano, I'm the artist of "Plan 9 From Outer Space Strikes Again!" and I'm here to give you a special step-by-step sneak peak of the process used to bring Tor Johnson and the rest of Plan 9's crew back to life.

Everyone knows about Plan 9 and why it is called the "worst movie ever made" (well, sincerely there are worst movies than this). Plan 9 From Outer Space features aliens, zombies, vampires, ghouls, super bombs and a lot more, all in just 79 minutes!

With this comic book, we tried to repeat that weirdness in just 28 pages! The only difference being that Ed Wood didn't want to do it so ugly, he was thinking of doing a great movie! (and yes, it is) Instead we (Darren Davis the editor, Chad Helder the writer and at last me) had the duty to do it weird.

At the beginning I thought "I'll do Plan 9 in my way, that will be the real weirdness!". I was thinking of doing Plan 9 as a more serious title but after just a couple of pages the power of Plan 9 won the day.

So, I haven't changed Plan 9 but Plan 9 has changed me, with weird shots, strange panels structure, funny sequences, and goofs that were planned by Darren Davis and Chad Helder.

Even if this comic book was intended to not be so weird, at last, the weirdness would overcome it. This is probably because of the power (or curse ?) of "Plan 9".

I'll start with the making of the cover. Obviously this couldn't have been something other than an homage to the classic movie poster.

Look at the bikers well, because they will be the only "living" bikers of the book.

…And what would a Plan 9 sneak peak will be without a Tor image?

Plan 9 From Outer Space is the third time I have worked with Chad as writer and Darren as editor (the first two were "Vincent Price Presents" issue # 2 and # 4) so they know how I work.

It's good to have that relationship because they always trust me when I make some changes.

Obviously, to draw Tor Johnson was one of the best things of the book. There was no need to make a "comic book" version of him, because in real life, he seemed to step right off a page.

I have enjoyed all three jobs that I have done with Chad Helder as a writer. His scripts are really good and I think its not easy to pass from Neanderthals vs. Werewolves (VP presents # 2), to lost kids in gothic house with cyber-dog and a dad like Vincent Price (VC Presents # 4), to a "Plan 9" sequel.

All of his books came out really well. (and I'm not the only one to say it) Chad's script are always open to artist's idea, as you can see by the page description.

After I read the script I thought "what I can do for this page?". I figured it would be best to remain with the camera behind the zombie kids, in a way not to show it to the reader. Also, I thought it would be good to finish inside the boy's mouth to better emphasize the scream.

As you can see in the penciled version, I forgot to draw the boy's glasses. I even forgot to do it after inking it.

The whole glasses thing is just another demonstration of how the "Plan 9 curse" works. Could it be "goof power?" (or maybe I was just careless?) I decided to fix it with the graphic tablet just because there were enough goofs (wanted and not) inside the book.

Here are some other interesting things in the book.

All the penciled pages seem to be lacking details, shadows and blacks. Sometimes they seems more near a layout page than a penciled page, but it's that way just because I always ink myself.

I do it just if the pages have a particular light/shadow and need to be tested with the pencils before to ink it.

I hope that you have enjoyed this little sneak peak of "Plan 9 From Outer Space Strikes Again!"
