JUSTIN McCONNELL:

We already have the entire twelve issue run mapped out, and needed a good event to put in our demo. The first step we had was to write the script for the page. We also had the film's co-creator/art director Kevin Hutchinson do a number of concept sketches to pass on to our illustrator, Justin Erickson.

JUSTIN ERICKSON:

Hi, my name is Justin Erickson. I handle all the art duties for the upcoming vampire comic, The Eternal: Final Dawn.

My method of doing sequential art is pretty standard and straight-forward: illustrate the sequence of events necessary as easily and directly to the reader while balancing artwork, layout and pacing. Horror comics are especially fun because the of heavy importance of atmosphere. Plus how fun is it to draw monsters? C'mon.

All of my art begins here as scribbles in my wee little sketchbook. I start with the supplied script to establish to work out how many panels I'll need to tell the story and how best to tell it visually. Usually I sketch three or four different versions of each page to force myself to develop an idea to its fullest. Plus it's a bitch to have a page half inked and to come up with a better idea making all the work you've done useless. To me this is the most important stage. You can have the prettiest comic book in the world but if it doesn't tell a story and have strong fundamentals, it's a peice of garbage.

When I'm satisfied with the rough sketches of the page, I scan them and begin work on the blue-line stage. The sketches are the only real-media portion of my process as everything from here is handled in Painter and Photoshop. As important the sketches are to having a well-told story, the blue-line stage is as important for the final art. Shitty pencils will only make the ink stage that much harder and hurt the final product.

Once the blue-line pencils are finished I ink the page to tighten up the artwork. As with the pencils stage, the inking is handled in Painter to capture a real media look and feel.

Now to add the colours to make the page really sing. I do this in Photoshop as it's a little faster and easier then Painter. When the colours are done, the lettering is layed out. I usually come back to a page two days after I finish it to give it one last look-over to see if I can make any improvements.

Hope you enjoyed this little write-up! We have some great things planned for TE:FD, which I can't wait to share with you all. For more of my art check out my site at http://www.justin-erickson.com.

Fangs a lot,

Justin
