Doctor Strange: The Oath #1 of 5

Writer: Brian K Vaughn
Artists: Marcos Martin & Alvaro Lopez
Publisher: Marvel

Doctor_StrangeInitially, I was not sure about picking this up since I am limited in the books I buy. I decided to take the plunge because Doctor Strange has ties to many of my favorite characters.

Issue one is an age-old story about the bond between two good men who are more than friends. Over the years, Doctor Strange and Wong have saved each other’s lives, fought side by side and even fought against each other in darker times. It’s a bond of friendship that will last a lifetime. It is great story of fantasy and the supernatural in response to cold, harsh reality.

Brian K Vaughn does a great job with the flow of the story. The current story and the flashbacks are well written and flow back and forth with ease.

Marcos Martin and Alvaro Lopez do a great job with artwork. It has a classic feel and yet looks modern at the same time. No overdone glam and glitz. It’s a look that brings back Dr Strange, as we know him and reintroduces him all over again. Javier Rodriguez colors look great in the book. Not too bright and fits with the art.

This looks to be a great mini-series right out of the gate. Overall, it’s a great story about what one guy is willing to do for his friend.

Overall: 4 out of 5
