Criminal Macabre A Cal McDonald Mystery: Two Red Eyes

Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Writer: Steve Niles
Artist: Kyle Hotz
Colors: Michelle Madsen

Review by: Rob Caprilozzi

In usual Cal McDonald fashion, Cal finds himself in a troubling situation. This situation leads to Cal getting severely beaten by a handful of men which lands him in the hospital.

Outside the hospital, Cal's friend, Mo'lock, arrives and notices many other Ghouls already at the hospital. The Ghouls tell Mo'lock that they are all coming here, to Cal McDonald.

One of the Ghouls, Shaw'na, tells Mo'lock that a great darkness is heading for the coast of California, from Europe. At that moment, a pack of lycanthrope's come to finish off Cal McDonald, like dogs sniffing wounded prey.

The Ghouls do battle with the Lycans outside of the hospital and manage to kill them all. After the battle, Shaw'na takes Mo'lock to Santa Monica, where the great evil is landing.

Back inside the hospital, Cal wakes from his nightmares and sees his ex-girlfriend, Sabrina Lynch, at his bedside.

At the pier in Santa Monica, Mo'lock and Shaw'na arrive. They see nothing out of the ordinary. Then all of a sudden, a huge ship doesn't stop and comes crashing into the pier, as the issue ends.

This is the typical fantastic writing we have come to expect from Steve Niles. With Cal McDonald we always expect to see plenty of monsters, blood, and guts and this issue delivers. I expect this series to only get better with each issue as the great evil has arrived from Europe. Issue two comes out soon so be sure to go to your local comic shop and pick it up.
