The Descent

The Descent: Not Ready for Lifetime Television.

The_DescentJust recently released on DVD, is the spelunking extravaganza, “The Descent”, written and directed by Neil Marshall. The movie has six, thrill-seeking female friends coming together for their yearly adventure. Without giving too much away, the subplot and dynamics between the women, especially the two main characters Sarah (Shauna Macdonald) and Juno, (Natalie Mendoza), has the audience worrying that this is going to be some twisted Lifetime movie. Fear not! You won’t be hearing “Wind Beneath My Wings” in this film, nor is this just a big T&A festival with sweaty chicks running around a cave. This is a true horror movie.

The real action begins when part of the cave collapses behind the six, trapping them. This forces them to find another way out. The way this film is shot, the angles and lighting, make it especially eerie. There’s one tunnel scene, which is shot so well, I felt claustrophobic watching it.

Yeah, they were scared enough without crossing paths with these underground creatures, who started killing and feeding off of them. I’m not going to give too much away here because I recommend this one. The rest of movie is pretty much about the struggle for survival and a way out of the cave all at once.

There was a fair amount of blood and gore in this movie, more than I expected from the outset. It has suspense, women kicking some ass, and the creepy underground monsters. My standout moment, without spoiling anything was, quiet Sarah emerging from a pool of blood like the “Terminator” like a killing machine. Overall, I liked this one, girls being sassy, creepy creatures, and maybe even a little revenge.

Gore Rating = 3 1/2
