Tales From the Crypt- now there's a huge name to live up to. That's
why I, along with many others, had high expectation for this
comic. Like the original, the comic centers around the Crypt keeper telling
scary tales. The first one centers around a couple in a very small town
in NJ, who scheme against their new neighbor. Being that the neighbor
is a well known artist of horror paintings, they feel they can steal the
artwork and sell it. When the husband is caught by the neighbor a fight
breaks out and neighbor is killed. A year later when the couple goes to
their storage unit to cash in on the painting, they find the paintings
of zombies and corpses have come to life. They both die of heart attacks.
The second story "for Serious Collectors Only" revolves around
Tommy, who I couldn't tell if he was a teenager, or a grown man ala Norman
Bates. His mother is always on him for his figurine/toy collection. He
sees one he must have from Asia. He steals from the cash register at his
crappy job, and is caught after he's already bought the figure. The figure
eventually comes to life and kills him.
In keeping with the original Tales from the Crypt, bad karma always comes
back to bite these people. However, I will say I know my expectations
were high, but I was a bit disappointed. The first tale ends the the couple
having heart attacks. They couldn't haven been eaten by the zombies or
at least a fight have broken out. I felt that was sort of lame. Maybe
that's just the numbness of our generation though. I did think the second
story was better and had more potential. The artwork was not impressive,
to say the least. I'm comparing it to both the artwork of the original
E.C. Comics and current horror comics. Because of the tradition I will
pick up #2 and hope it continues to grow.
What could have been with issue #1? I am sure horror comic heavyweights
would have happily added their talent for at least the FIRST issue. This
book should have been exploding with well known names to kick this series
off. The series has potential being TALES FROM THE CRYPT, but it HAS to
be upward from here on out.
I rate it 2 1/2, with the 1/2 coming from the respectful dedication on
the opening page.

from the Crypt #1 Review.
